Roger Clarke's Asimov's Laws of Robotics
Asimov was not the first to conceive of well-engineered, non-threatening robots, but he pursued the theme with such enormous imagination and persistence that most of the ideas that have emerged in this branch of science fiction are identifiable with his stories.
Asimov investigated this in an early short story and later in a novel: A mind-reading robot interprets the first law as requiring him to give people not the correct answers to their questions but the answers that he knows they want to hear 14,16,17.
Asimov suggested one class of deadlock that would not occur: If in a given situation a robot knew that it was powerless to prevent harm to a human, then the first law would be inoperative; the third law would become relevant, and it would not self- immolate in a vain attempt to save the human.

Asimov developed the Three Laws (with the help of his editor John W. Campbell) because he was tired of the science fiction stories of the 1920s and 1930s in which the robots, like Frankenstein's creation, turned on their creators and became dangerous monsters.

I first read Foundation at about twelve, and it made a deep impression on me. Rereading it, I can see the source of some of my own juvenilia-- stories of interplanetary and parliamentary intrigue, conveyed entirely by talk, with a charismatic but inscrutable figure in the center.
Asimov assumes that a superior economy can maintain its dominion indefinitely-- a hypothesis that looked more plausible in 1951 than in 1997.
Asimov's analysis-- "Cleon is strong because he permits no strong subjects"-- is simply ahistorical.

A non-human race driven into the interior of their planet as a result of the slow cooling of their sun resorts to a desperate plan to colonize a new home before their old one dies completely—to colonize the interior of another planet, the Earth.
Asimov set out in this story to create a race for whom mother love is perverse and repugnant, and on that level he succeeds.
The main problem is that, surrounded by stronger material in The Martian Way and Other Stories, this tale tends to look anemic in comparison.

Julie Rigg: Yes, I don’t think Asimov is much read these days but the ideas came from his first collection of short stories in 1950, which were published under this title.
It was a collection of nine short stories about robots and in them Asimov developed his three laws of robotics, which were designed to change the way people thought about robots.
Julie Rigg: Yes and it's interesting that Asimov wrote these when artificial intelligence was just a theory on the horizon, though fifty years ago people were already discussing the possibility of robots who design robots.
