The Holy Empire of Delgados is a massive, devout nation, notable for its complete absence of social welfare.

The Delgados : Universal Audio - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
The Delgados refer to Universal Audio as their "long-awaited 'pop' album," and while the description is apt, it's their penchant for atmospheric, industrial town melancholia that ultimately wins out.
What's interesting about that single, as well as the bulk of Universal Audio, is that it's the simple omission of the excessive reverb that defined their two previous records that gives these new tracks their pop sheen.
Like all Delgados records, it takes repeated drives along the city outskirts to sink in, but when it does there's no going back, and the listener is rewarded once again with something rich, happily overcast, and strangely intangible.

The first indication of the delgados new material came in August with a new Peel Session: the reaction was extraordinary with John Peel hailing them as "the best band in Britain." The four Peel Session tracks will appear on the delgados second album, due for release in May/June 1998.
Since their 1993 debut, The Delgados have maintained their strong connections in the Glasglow indie field through their constant touring and record label Chemikal Underground.

 Stayfun » The Delgados
Having heard it, however, I’ve swept all those reservations away because the new compilation is the perfect way to remember the band - like a grand two disc greatest hits package that’s full of life yet refreshingly different from the originals.
A perfect summer pop song, yet hearing The Delgados stripped down to acoustics was such a rare thing.
Usually all strings, horns, flutes and fuzzy guitars, it wasn’t until the very last time I saw them live in Rotterdam that I got a hint of how they could sound when tearing it all back to minimalistic proportions - and even that was only for one song.

The Delgados are one of those bands who don't shy away from using a great deal of instrumentation, whereas some indie bands avoid strings in case they start sounding like The Verve, which I suppose is fair enough.
This might be the album where the Delgados break through into the mainstream, and though they have done it by turning down the distortion very slightly, don't hold that against them, as this is none the worse for it.
The Delgados seem to have a thing about openings; namely, the first thirty seconds of their albums tend to not be very good.

The Delgados, while never being household names, have quietly become one of the most influential bands of recent times.
Delgados audiences are never the most animated of beasts, and it was no exception at the Leadmill.
Older songs were also dusted down, such as the wondrous American Trilogy and Accused Of Stealing from the Mercury nominated Great Eastern album, and Arcane Model, from the band's early album Peloton, was greeted enthusiastically by the hardcore faithful.

Two more singles, "Under Canvas Under Wraps" and "Sucrose," as well as a U.K. tour in support of Elastica, preceded the October bow of their first full-length effort, Domestiques.

DOA - The Delgados - Universal Audio
In a lot of ways, The Delgados' Universal Audio is the pop-rock record that scores of bands have been struggling — and, quite honestly, failing — to make in recent years (or, at least, struggling to make since Oasis and their photostatic copies seemed to go the way of the buffalo).
The Delgados balance this lean toward the studio-bright and commercially accessible not only with their more atypical tracks but with lyrics that you wouldnít expect to accompany music that can feel this sweet and light.
While many lesser acts seem to throw together hooks as a means of just landing on the air or paving the way for their "real projects," The Delgados seem genuinely engaged in the work, something that could lead more than a few sets of ears to be genuinely engaged in them.

But if the Delgados’ fanbase was relatively modest in size, it did include the most important fan a fledgling indie act could ask for: late BBC broadcaster John Peel, who-- judging by this impressive 2xCD, 29-song Peel Session collection-- seemed to invite the band to his Maida Vale studios whenever The Fall weren’t available.
The Delgados’ next album, 2000’s Dave Fridmann-produced The Great Eastern, was arguably their greatest, so it’s somewhat disappointing that it’s only represented by a single four-song session (though the versions of “No Danger” and “Aye Today” prove those songs don’t need Fridmann’s Bonham-esque bombast to connect).
As The Delgados’ music grew more serious, their Peel Sessions seemed to get more silly: the September 2002 set shows them to be the rare band that can cover ELO (“Mr.

The Delgados have come a long way since their humble beginnings as a shy Scottish indie-pop quartet who couldn't get a record deal.
Using Chemikal Underground as a sturdy platform, The Delgados have helped launch the careers of Mogwai, Magoo, Arab Strap, and Bis as well as allowing their own musical stock to grow in quantity and quality.
If you are already a Delgados fan, you'll gradually develop a little bit of love for Hate, though your instinctive heart will tell you it's not quite as fun as The Breeders-shaped pop of Domestiques (1997) or as remarkable as the glorious folk-psychedelia found on both Peloton (1999) and The Great Eastern (2000).

The Delgados’ secret weapon is producer Dave Fridmann (bass player for Mercury Rev), who reconstructs likable pop numbers into stereophonic skyscrapers of towering keyboards and studio-created symphonies.

 The Delgados: Hate (2003): Reviews
The dramatic, melancholy undercurrents of string-driven pop nuggets "The Drowning Years" and "Never Look at the Sun" showcase the Delgados as the smart, cutting-edge descendents of the Carpenters: everything Belle & Sebastian want to be, but are too damn precocious to pull off.
The record is very innocent on the surface, but it’s in the lyrics (again) of Alun Woodward and Emma Pollack that make it cold and dark, even though their vocals seem to make it all sound safe.
The delgados combine the most beautiful and sublime music with the darkest and most pessimistic lyrics to make an album full of great songs that will give you a hell of an emotional ride.
