The Deluge (Polish Potop) is a name commonly assigned in the history of Poland to a series of wars in the 17th century which left Poland in ruins.
The Deluge also stopped the era of Polish tolerance, since most of the invaders were non-Catholic, with expulsion of the Polish brethren as a clear sign of it.
During the Deluge, many thousands of Polish Jews also fell victim to pogroms initiated by rebelling Cossacks.

These two films, made during the Communist era when national pride was at a low point, won Polish hearts with depictions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, considered by Poles to be the golden era of their history.
Hoffman's name has been intimately connected with that of Sienkiewicz, ever since he made Pan Wolodyjowski (Mr Wolodyjowski, 1967-69) and Potop (Deluge, 1974) - adaptations of the third and second parts of the trilogy of which Ogniem i mieczem forms the first book.
