  DESERT MOUNTAIN MUSIC TOGETHER
We believe that music ability is as much a basic life skill as walking or talking, and that all children can achieve basic competence in music provided their early music environment is rich.
Music Together classes are based on the idea that making music with children, in the family, and in a community of families......
Children experience the various macro and micro beats that are in music, experiment with their vocal mechanisms in high and low ranges, learn to use their upper and lower adjustments to sing, and repeat both rhythm patterns and tonal patterns in a variety of meters and modalities.

Boosey and Hawkes: The home of contemporary music
Thus the overall harmonic movement of The Desert Music is from the possibility of a D dorian minor center to more and more ambiguity, until in the third movement, where the text would seem to suggest it, there is no clear harmonic center at all.
The pulse which begins and ends The Desert Music and recurs throughout it is significant both musically and as a kind of wordless response to and commentary on the text itself.
Musically it presents the harmonic cycles of the movements as a kind of pulsing chorale.

My grandparents moved to the desert almost three decades ago, before country clubs and resorts had turned all available expanses of dry Indian land into empty lots waiting to be developed.
When I hear the desert, I hear all these natural, ambient whispers and rumblings too, but I also hear the audio desert of my grandparents: the mechanized spray of sprinklers, the hushed baritone voices of TV golf announcers echoing throughout their house.
Van Dyke once characterized the desert as a place where "everything within in its borders seems fighting to maintain itself against destroying forces." The desert music of my grandparents now reflects that fight: the incessant anxious hum of my grandmother as she talks to herself, the exhaling hiss of my grandfather’s dialysis machine.

Palm Desert barely shows you any of that, though, just ghostly expanses of single-story homes and undeveloped desert populated by flowering bundles of brittle brush, all set against blankets of electric blue sky and inflamed white clouds.
The Palm Desert it shows is the Palm Desert of “Palm Desert,” a song written by Van Dyke Parks in 1968 for his classic album of Southern California surrealism, Song Cycle (Warner Bros.).
Some of desert modernism’s greatest triumphs, including the newly revamped Spa Hotel, were built on land once zoned as Section 14, a square mile of Indian land used as a post-WW2 African-American and Latino reservation until the city bulldozed it in 1966.

The orchestral recording of The Desert Music gives you Reich's society colored in these wonderful huge dense sounds, which to most of his listeners is almost alien to their experience with his music, although most fulfilling in so many changing ways.
The density of the music is an interleving bundle of soundfibers, a civilization that lives and breathes.
The Desert Music is Reich's first effort to really compose for symphony orchestra, and he seems to be trying to step into other composers' shoes, to write a great symphonic work in the tradition of so many choral-orchestral masterpieces.

Justin Adams: Desert Road - PopMatters Music Review
He refocused on his early life's observations and impressions of music in other places, where music is regarded as a natural component of daily life and is supported by the belief that music is created and played primarily for the sake of the music.
Pushed with African percussion and accents (bells, scrapers, finger cymbals, and even a cardboard box), Adams' desert music is often drawn from the deep well of blues that people now say came from Mali, blended with North and West African music and dipped with electronic ambience.
Desert Road is a rich and promising invention that provides a thoughtful atmosphere when considering some of the many moods of a complex and distant place.

Barnes & Noble.com - Music: Steve Reich: Tehillim; The Desert Music, Alan Pierson, CD
Once grouped with Philip Glass and the other reductivist composers who came to the fore in the 1960s, Reich had moved on to large-scale works for chamber ensembles that were far grander in size and scope than his earliest compositions.
Tehillim (1981) and The Desert Music (1984, here in a 2001 revision) are Reich's most elaborate pieces from this period, featuring the composer's characteristic pulsating rhythms and slowly shifting harmonies -- a musical language that arrived with Reich's breakthrough Drumming from 1971 and grew with 1976's Music for 18 Musicians.
Both works have been recorded before: The Desert Music was originally released on Nonesuch in 1985 and Tehillim on ECM in '82.

We know now that a composer's own performance or recording of his or her work isn't necessarily definitive — Stravinsky is but the most famous example of a composer who wasn't the best conductor of his work.
Most people who have heard Reich's music would characterize it in general as energetic, rhythmically challenging and often exciting — but "emotional" is not a word that would normally come to mind.
The Desert Music is a more emotionally ambiguous score, with a particularly elliptical text selected from poems by William Carlos Williams.
