Desperate is a fitting description for the Michael Cimino-directed fiasco Desperate Hours, a remake of the far-superior 1955 Humphrey Bogart film.
From the opening scene of a sportscar speeding along a mountain road backed by a jarring, over-produced score, the 1990 movie heads straight downhill and right over the cliff.
What's left is a mess of a movie that Cimino has filled with style and flash but which lacks any semblance of substance or cohesion.

Movie Review - The Desperate Hours
The Desperate Hours is a well-done update of the 1950's film in which Mickey Rourke plays the Humphrey Bogart role.
In the 1990 version a sex-smitten female attorney aids the prison escape of a convicted murderer and two other inmates.
During the filming, the horses were herded out of the area and the action with the gunfire began about a half hour later with no horses near.

This remake of the 1955 Humphrey Bogart thriller DESPERATE HOURS reunites director Michael Cimino and star Mickey Rourke, who last worked together on the so-bad-it's-good YEAR OF THE DRAGON.
This time out, the result of their collaboration is merely bad, despite rich, painterly cinematography by Doug Milsome (FULL METAL JACKET), a driving score by David Mansfield, and a terrific cast.

"The Desperate Hours" may not be as well known as other Bogart and March classics, but it definitely is a winner.
There are probably a lot of you who have never seen "The Desperate Hours," and I'm sure most of you in that group will really like this movie.
"The Desperate Hours" may not be a more noted "classic" movie, but it's still a good watch and is anchored by the performances and the fact it's the only movie Fredric March and Humphrey Bogart worked together on.

It was out of conjectures such as these that, in the Spring of 1953, I sat down to write a novel which, when completed, I titled "The Desperate Hours."
In the news-stories there was little to suggest what happens in the invaded and ravaged home: the terror of the family, the desperation and paradoxes in the criminals, the inter-action of these characters caught in a situation that, in time, creates its own momentum, sets its own course.
This course, and its ultimate resolution, seemed for a while to be determined by the warped mind of the young invader himself.

The Desperate Hours directed by Michael Cimino, is an attempt to remake the Humphrey Bogart classic of the same name with indifferent results.
Both Hopkins and Rourke, usually excellent actors, give wildly over-the-top performances, aided by the lurid, over-written dialogue of the screenplay and the badly paced, ill-conceived direction by Cimino, which instead of creating tension and suspense, simply confuses the already muddled and incomprehensible plot.
The Desperate Hours is a pale example of the original with little to recommend it.
