		The Spinners first hit the charts in 1961, with "That's What Girls Are Made For." In 1964, they made their debut at the Apollo Theater and won instant acclaim, a rare feat at the time.
		The Detroit band's popularity was contributed to by their producer, Thom Bell, who was beginning to be recognized for his trademark Philly soul or "Philadelphia Sound".
		Also, The Spinners are known in England as The Detroit Spinners or The Motown Spinners because a Liverpool based folk band had taken the name in Britain during the 1960s.

		As we approach the monolithic Detroit Institute of Arts we hear eerie, muffled blues emanating from an old freight train carriage on railway sleepers in the middle of the lawn, light bursting out of it through bullet holes.
		It's a disturbingly beautiful Yoko Ono installation, a tribute to a group of Mexican immigrants who were left to die in a locked freight train in the desert in 1987.

		After the success of this single Motown followed quickly with the follow up ‘Together We Can Make Such Sweet Music’ in the same vein and on careful inspection you can see how they took their vocal delivery to Atlantic who took it to greater commercial heights.
		Whilst the dancers favourite from the mod era is undoubtedly ‘I’ll Always Love You’ written by Mickey Stevenson and Ivy Jo Hunter, it didn’t appear to sell too well commercially in ‘65’ and was later re-issued as a flip side to ‘For All We Know’ two years later.
		The rest of this CD is made up of album tracks from the bands two LP’s namely ‘The Original Spinners’ and ‘Second Time Around’ both of which are now highly collectable and worthy of seeking if you are a vinyl collector.

		Despite being formed in the fifties and signing to Motown in the early sixties, the (Detroit) Spinners struggled to make an impact although they eventually had a British and American top twenty hit with It's a shame (written by Stevie Wonder).
		During their time with Atlantic, the (Detroit) Spinners had three different lead singers, these being Bobby Smith, Philip Wynne and John Edwards.
		If you enjoy seventies soul music, the (Detroit) Spinners are definitely worth a listen.
