When the DEVIL RIDES OUT was finally released, the British censorship bureau had some difficulties with the depiction of the ritual and Sabbat scenes, especially those showing the Satanists reveling in debauchery.
THE DEVIL RIDES OUT is a fast moving, episodic film that features many memorable moments including the Duc’s discovery of a pentagram in Simon’s observatory, the fl mass ceremony in the woods, and the climax in which the Satanists are destroyed by the Duc.
However, the most suspenseful part of THE DEVIL RIDES OUT is the lengthy sequence in which the Duc, Rex, Simon, Marie, and her husband are trapped inside the protective pentagram.

Based on the novel by Dennis Wheatley, The Devil Rides Out was the first of three novels by Wheatley that Hammer Studios would adapt for the silver screen.

Wheatley was an ardent British imperialist and an anti-Semite, while a number of his Wartime thrillers speak out with admiration of Mussolini, Hitler and Herman Goering.
This Hammer adaptation was scripted by horror novelist/screenwriter Richard Matheson, author of The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957) and Roger Corman's The House of Usher (1960).

THE CINEMA LASER DVD REVIEW-- THE DEVIL RIDES OUT
THE DEVIL RIDES OUT ($30) ranks amongst director Terence Fisher's greatest works, and of the Hammer titles currently available on DVD, the film that I would rate a true masterpiece of the horror genre.
THE DEVIL RIDES OUT is a superior Hammer film in every way, thanks to Terence Fisher's sharply focused direction, which ekes every last drop of horror and suspense from the story.
THE DEVIL RIDES OUT is a genuine Hammer masterwork that should not be missed.

 The Devil Rides Out (1968)
Hammer were quick to see the viability of such a film and a contract was subsequently negotiated, with The Devil Rides Out agreed upon as the first subject.
It quickly became apparent that The Devil Rides Out (aka The Devil's Bride) would be one of Hammer's top-flight productions when Terence Fisher was signed to direct it and Arthur Grant to photograph it.
Most memorable of all, however, is the lengthy sequence in which the Duc, Simon and two of their friends (played by Paul Eddington and Sarah Lawson) fight off all manner of horrific apparitions (including a giant tarantula and the Angel of Death) from within the protection of a pentacle.

Christopher Lee has something of a bee in his bonnet about remaking Hammer's 1968 film of The Devil Rides Out, citing the flaws of the special effects in the original film as his principal concern.
While it is true that the effects would be more impressive today, the old adage about remakes springs to mind.
Aside from the themes of young lovers found in Scars of Dracula and Taste The Blood Of Dracula, his music for The Devil Rides Out may be his most admirable.

I would venture to guess that even were the majors to release titles from their Hammer catalogue they would do so with no special features whatsoever (except perhaps a trailer which is standard).
Anchor Bay has sought out many of the surviving cast and crew from these productions and recorded audio commentaries that will be of great historical value in the future.
"The Devil Rides Out" is perhaps Christopher Lee's finest film for Hammer Studios, and for once he plays the hero of the piece.

Their 1968 adaptation of Wheatley's novel The Devil Rides Out, with superb performances from Charles Gray and Christopher Lee and a literate script from Richard Matheson, was unsuccessful at the box office but is now regarded as one of the studio's finest moments.
The confusion reflects that of Catherine adrift in a strange country and we are put in the same position as John Verney; working out the plot from hints and suggestions.
To The Devil - A Daughter is certainly a bit of a mess and the conclusion really does live down to its reputation as being one of the most ludicrous scenes in the history of British horror.

In The Devil Rides Out, adapted by Richard Matheson from the book by Dennis Wheatley, the Duc de Richleau (Christopher Lee in perhaps one of his two or three greatest roles) finds himself in a battle with the forces of evil in the guise of satanic ringleader Mocata (a sinister Charles Gray).
The action scenes are well handled and the towering Lee cuts quite a figure leaping through hoards of robed devil worshippers to save a sacrificial victim, but the film peaks in an eerie supernatural battle in which Richleau and his skeptical party confronts Mocata's demons while protected in a giant pentagram.
The effects are coarse and dated by today's standards, but the gorgeous period detail, vivid color, and unsettling imagery create a sinister ambiance, and Fisher's mix of psychodrama and swashbuckling action makes for an engrossing thriller, a life-and-death struggle between two masters of the forces of light and darkness.
