In the revised Conclusion (entitled Thoughts in an XJS) Cabell explains that the book is a work in progress and adds more depth and understanding concerning his friend James Herbert by analysing the man today (Cabell speaks of discussions between he and Herbert on release of the hardback of Devil in the Dark).
The first, By Horror Haunted never saw paperback and added little to what fans already new about him, whilst Dark Places was Herbert exploring locations and legends and adding a couple of biographical notes.
Devil in the Dark is a true companion to Herbert's work, it is also a serious piece of literary criticism on the SF/Horror genre.

“The Devil in the Dark” in many ways embodies the essence of what “Star Trek”; is really supposed to be about, and also deals quite intelligently with the concept of what an encounter with a truly alien life form might be like.
“The Devil in the Dark” is one of the very, very few times that “Star Trek”; writers have attempted to create and work with an alien life form that is, in fact, truly and completely alien, devoid both of humanoid shape and of the ability to take that shape on for the sake of convenience.
In any case, for any die hard “Star Trek”; fan, “The Devil in the Dark” is going to be a requirement for ownership as an essential part of the original series film library.

We do have to suffer through Kirk's flowery speech on the destiny of mankind (we are intended to march to the drum, not stroll to the flute), but Spock's final line is memorably touching.
We see Spock at the other emotional extreme in "The Devil in the Dark." The Enterprise is investigating the death of dozens of miners in the colony on Janus VI.
Spock's mind-meld with the mother Horta, where he weeps for the lost children, is one of Leonard Nimoy's finest moments on the show (think about it: the actor is talking to a fake rock) and even McCoy manages to work a minor medical miracle with a trowel and some thermal concrete.

'Devil in the Dark' opens with an emergency on Janus VI, a planet rich in raw materials crucial to the running of Federation operations.
Written by series guru Gene L. Coon and directed by mainstay Joseph Pevney (who alternated directorial chores with Marc Daniels during the show's second season), 'The Devil in the Dark' is a breathlessly paced episode reflecting a delightful variety of cross-genre influences--Westerns, creature-features, gritty noir.
Add one of the most effective and moving instances of the Enterprise's search for new life on Star Trek (plus McCoy's infamous complaint, 'I'm a doctor, not a bricklayer!'), and this is a memorable program indeed.
