The Dharma Bums - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dharma Bums is a 1958 novel by Beat Generation author Jack Kerouac.
The semi-fictional accounts in the novel are based upon events that occurred years after On the Road.
These elements place The Dharma Bums at a critical junction foreshadowing the consciousness-probing works of several authors in the 1960s such as Timothy Leary and Ken Kesey.

One of the best and most popular of Kerouac's autobiographical novels, The Dharma Bums is based on experiences the writer had during the mid-1950s while living in California, after he'd become interested in Buddhism's spiritual mode of understanding.
Forget the glib idea of alterna-cultural one-upmanship that passes for a Beat attitude these days - "The Dharma Bums" is about naïve exuberance, anything-but-ironic soul-searching, an eager exploration of life's sorrows and joys, and the sheer, exhilarating, wondrous zest of being alive and aware in an endlessly fresh world.
While the latter is the beat manifesto celebrating the peripatetic lifestyle, BUMS focuses on the beat romance with Buddhist enlightenment and the building of an inner life.

 Dharma Bums
I'm reading Dharma Bums now, I'm feeling that familiar irritation...Kerouac is 30-some years old in this book (1955) and still seems to be mired in adolescent fascinations...mostly getting drunk on gut-rot wine and making girls, with interesting conversations thrown in between the puerile parts...maybe my insight will develop further.
So, in Dharma Bums you get to experience a version of "It's the night of the poetry reading at Six Gallery in San Francisco, the night of the birth of the San Francisco Poetry Renaissance, and...
Can't say that I'd call Dharma any sort of version of "The Marketing of the Wilderness" (see Susan's project) --not exactly riding high on a wave of materialism, but she has her view...and there's an interesting array of links.

I bade farewell to the little bum of Saint Teresa at the crossing, where we jumped off, and went to sleep the night in the sand in my blankets, far down the beach at the foot of a cliff where cops wouldn't see me and drive me away.
The little Saint Teresa bum was the first genuine Dharma Bum I'd met, and the second was the number one Dharma Bum of them all and in fact it was he, Japhy Ryder, who coined the phrase.
He was wiry, suntanned, vigorous, open, all howdies and glad talk and even yelling hello to bums on the street and when asked a question answered right off the bat from the top or bottom of his mind I don't know which and always in a sprightly sparkling way.

I first read "Dharma Bums" when I was in college in Boulder, Colorado, I was an apathetic academic but had a budding interest in Buddhism and was sitting in for sunrise meditation with a Zen group at a Buddhist temple.
Still, I think I started all of Kerouac's books somewhere along the line, some multiple times, and "Dharma Bums" was the only one I finished.
"Dharma Bums" represents a time, a naive time in retrospect perhaps, but a fun exciting time when the beats were young, full of energy and enthusiasm, and really believed they were on to something cosmic.

 Dharma Bums Reviews
The Dharma Bums were founded by songwriter Phil Void in the early 1970s in India and Nepal, and since then the group has performed and recorded all over the world.
Originally, the group was a loose collection of musicians, seekers of enlightenment, and “dharma bums” traveling in Asia during the ’70s, who hooked up with Phil Void, a long-time student of Tibetan Buddhism and supporter of the Dalai Lama’s efforts for a peaceful solution to Tibet’s terrible situation under Chinese Communist occupation.
Whether they are singing about Tibet, environmental issues, non-violence, or everyday human concerns, the Dharma Bums’ songs reflect their strong belief in freedom and the eternal quest for enlightenment by the human spirit.

Following the explosive energy of "On the Road" comes "The Dharma Bums" in which Kerouac charts the spiritual quest of a group of friends in search of Dharma or Truth.
Following the huge success of 'On The Road' Kerouac had the chance to publish some of his manuscripts that he had been carrying around the country from house to house for nearly ten years.
One of the first was the magnificent 'Dharma Bums', a semi-autobiographical account of his time on the West Coast in the company of Gary Snyder and Allen Ginsberg.
