The Dhol Foundation, led by Johnny Kalsi, has a mission to bring the dhol drum to the attention of the world.
The Dhol Foundation's latest album, Drum-Believable, shows the multifaceted ways in which the dhol can be incorporated into different genres of music, not only Indian, but African, Celtic, Spanish and even electronica.
The dhol originated in the 16th century and was used as a form of communication by town criers to drum up crowds.

Over the three days the Dhol Foundation new album sold out at the WOMAD store and after various requests and constant demands by fans who had seen Johnny perform over the years, he decided to bow down to pressure and gave a live performance towards the end of Village stage line up.

A 15 000 audience watched the king of Dhol go wild on stage and at one point, fans were asked to not make so much noise as they we’re drowning out the main stage audience of about 50 000.

The first Dhol Foundation class took place in 1991 in a community hall in Slough and within five weeks through word of mouth it had become a forty-strong student class.
Led by Johnny Kalsi, key drummer for the Afro Celt Sound System, Dhol Foundation creates an intense mix of rhythm and sound via bhangra, dance, and electronica - feeding the energy of the urban clubs with their own Punjabi spirit.
Kalsi, using the loud, open tone of the dhol drum (first used in the 16th century), has developed a style of powering big beats and dynamics that has become the focal point of his performance - a style that has come to dominate the bhangra and Asian-crossover scene.

Larger chimtas were fashioned for big fires around which mystics and faqirs congregate at the shrines of saints and were first used by these devotees as musical instruments.
The chimta used by performers is approximately one metre long and is played by bringing the tongs together by rhythmic pressure of the forefinger and thumb of the left hand.
