Alicia Keys : The Diary of Alicia Keys (Bonus DVD) - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
Since Alicia Keys' 2001 debut album, Songs in A Minor, was ever so slightly overpraised, expectations for her second album, 2003's The Diary of Alicia Keys, were ever so slightly too high.
This was a problem on Furtado's nearly simultaneously released Folklore, but Keys trumps her peer in one key way -- musically, this is a seamless piece of work, a sultry slow groove that emphasizes her breathy, seductive voice and lush soulfulness.
So, those expecting another album where Keys sounds wise beyond her years will bound to be disappointed by The Diary of Alicia Keys, since her writing reveals her age in a way it never did on the debut.

Alicia Keys: The Diary Of Alicia Keys (2003): Reviews
Those expecting another album where Keys sounds wise beyond her years will bound to be disappointed by The Diary of Alicia Keys, since her writing reveals her age in a way it never did on the debut.
Keys, however, proves to be a better singer than songwriter, as most of the latter half of the album slips into sleepy piano numbers.
Keys plays it far too safe here: There's nothing that will offend, and the content is patently generic enough that almost anyone, lovelorn or heartbroken, can build a personal soundtrack of romantic woe from its raw materials.

Keys, who wears gangsta cornrows and grew up immersed in hip-hop in uptown New York but also studied classical composition and sometimes plays a bit of Beethoven in concert, emerged as a singer-songwriter-instrumentalist-producer with genuine urban swagger: the first new pop artist of the millennium who was capable of changing music.
Keys has gotten better at conveying the sensation behind her words, delivering her lines with a shaded, complex emotionalism that sounds as though she’s working through every romantic hurdle a woman her age can face.
No mimicking traditionalist, Keys adores ’70s soul for its generosity, dignity and — this is key — respect for women, qualities she increasingly emphasizes in her own songs.

For The Diary of Alicia Keys shows that she is well on her way to fulfilling her potential.
Alicia still has what church folks call “Young People's Disease,” meaning that she has a habit of finding universal truths about relationships that most people already know and pronouncing those truths as if she is the first one to discover them herself.
Keys gives it that Pink-esque touch of the personal, adding layers and layers to her performance until you hear naked and unhinged emotion; a feeling entirely different from most mainstream R&B music.

Another highlight is the more personal track “Diary.” Sung in a deep, soothing alto over a bed of instrumentation lead by the piano, Keys eloquently communicates a desire for trust.
On “Samsonite man,” Keys sings about falling for the wrong man. On the next track “Nobody not really,” Keys sings “I would like someone to heal me with some empathy.” She bares her own soul through the music, touching her listeners.
As a woman, Keys steps on stages and does her own thing, free from restraints of what the media expect — liberating her listeners from hearing that same old music.

And she manages to sustain drama over the course of the 15 tracks on her masterful sophomore album, The Diary of Alicia Keyspartly by swelling her impressive voice to the top of its range with judicious rarity.
The album’s sweeping piano intro, “Harlem’s Nocturne,” is about the only moment on Diary when Keys shows off her skills on the ivories like the child prodigy she was.
But Keys is the center of gravity: Her voice is low and full, brimming with emotion.

It seems like Alicia took a long time to even come back with this album because she didn't want to risk being overexposed again like she was back in 2001.
Alicia still has a great voice, and her exceptional way of ticking the ivories definitely hasn't gone away, but the songs she chooses sometimes leave a little to be desired.

Slant Magazine - Music Review: Alicia Keys: The Diary Of Alicia Keys
Perhaps that's why the arrival of Alicia Keys' 2001 debut Songs In A Minor—though slightly overrated amidst all the anti-pop excitement—seemed like such a vibrant beam of light, and perhaps that's why her sophomore effort, The Diary Of Alicia Keys, will undoubtedly prompt slightly overblown expectations.
But the fact of the matter is, Diary builds on the promise of Songs In A Minor and, in many ways, trumps that album's achievements.
You actually believe Keys is a struggling waitress on the lead single "You Don't Know My Name," a lo-fi slice of vintage soul that makes much more sense next to album tracks like "If I Was Your Woman/Walk On By" than it does as a stand-alone on urban radio.
