The Discovery of Heaven - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Discovery of Heaven is a 1992 novel by the famous Dutch author Harry Mulisch.
The Discovery of Heaven tells the story of an angel-like being, who is ordered to return to Heaven the stone tablets containing the ten commandments, given to Moses by God, and in the book symbolizes the link between Heaven and Earth.
When he is on the verge of discovering heaven, he is killed by a freak asteroid, sent from heaven by the Angel.

The Discovery of Heaven by Harry Mulisch is the story of how a supreme being completes a heavenly task.
One thing is certain about 'The Discovery of Heaven': it is a book that will leave stray bits and pieces in your memory for a long time after you have read it; love it or hate it, it won't leave you feeling indifferent.

When Mulisch's masterpiece, The Discovery of Heaven, was published in the United States (1997), it was hailed as his magnum opus.
Mulisch displays his consummate skill as a novelist as he effortlessly uses a variety of narrative techniques; he is as at ease explaining complex scientific concepts as he is relating the dialog of everyday life.
While The Discovery of Heaven is equal parts John Irving's Prayer for Owen Meany and Eco's Foucault's Pendulum (religious overtones and conspiracy theories), The Procedure reminded this reader more of Jostein Gaarder's The Solitaire Mystery and Ethan Canin's Carry Me Across the Water, novels about origins and the curious paths lives take.

The group that would one day be known as Heaven's Gate first gained national visibility in the fall of 1975, when approximately 30 people mysteriously disappeared after a public lecture about flying saucers in the small beach community of Walport, Oregon.
Although little was known about the group, it was during this time period that the concept of "brainwashing" entered popular culture as a way of explaining the involvement of youth in cults and sectarian movements.
In heaven there is not the least pain or sadness; for every aspiration of nature must be finally realized.

This Writing Life: The Discovery of Heaven
I went to a preview screening in London on Monday night, a film of Harry Mulisch's The Discovery of Heaven.
It's depiction of heaven has all the darkness of the Jesuits so I can see even that challenges people's perceptions more than they find comfortable - heaven is dark and the earth resolutely sunny with some wonderful and warm people in it.
From The Discovery of Heaven I recognize that we maybe need more training so we know how to accommodate something so different to the standard (substandard!) fair.

Among them are a locksmith, an architect, and a philologist, who have just the skills to train Quinten for the task for which he has been brought into the world.
The Discovery of Heaven is a novel of ideas on a large scale, sprawling across science, religion, architecture, politics and more.
And the character range is limited: the principal characters all have lives centred on ideas (Quinten is a typically unconvincing child prodigy), none of the female characters are at all substantial, and many of the strongest elements are autobiographical.

Most readers and critics consider The Discovery of Heaven to be Mulisch's magnum opus.
Typical of Mulisch's style, The Discovery of Heaven is a challenging work that blends philosophical, psychological, scientific, and theological inquiries to tell a complex tale about a hedonistic astronomer who befriends a cerebral philologist.

The Discovery of Heaven has another theme, however, as is indicated in the dialogues which separate its four parts and provide prologue and epilogue.
These make it clear that angelic beings of some kind are manipulating Max and Onno for their own purpose: the production of a specific child to fulfil a particular destiny.

The Discovery of Heaven - Harry Mulisch
The Discovery of Heaven is, vaguely, a theological novel.
Modern science, with its roots there, has now usurped the place of the heavens.
One of the heavenly creatures has now been charged with settling things with mankind: the supreme being has decided that mankind, unravelling DNA, is coming too close to the province of the heavens, to understanding what its all about, and so the covenant between heaven and earth no longer holds.

There is enough material in The Discovery of Heaven to fill several books, and a writer of lesser integrity might have split the phases of Ada, Max, Onno, Sophia and Quinten's lives into separate volumes.
Instead, Mulisch expertly, if sometimes jarringly, even violently, welds them together using what would otherwise have been cliffhanger endings as startling links between episodes of quite different flavours.
