Topic: The Doom Generation

Mutant Reviewers from Hell do "The Doom Generation"
Doom Generation is just a piece of trash, and there is no debate about it.
So is the Doom Generation supposed to be a cheeky comedy that just fails miserably or is it supposed to be a serious look at the tangled web we weave when at first we practice to explore our sexuality while simultaneously killing bystanders indiscriminately?
But where Natural Born Killers is interesting, well acted and provocative, The Doom Generation is just flat out nasty, eye rollingly boring and SO badly acted I actually kept getting up to go to the bathroom just because peeing was more engaging a phenomenon than sitting in front of this train wreck of a movie.

 The Doom Generation
The Doom Generation is the second part of what Araki calls his teen apocalypse trilogy, the cream filling in the Oreo of Totally Fucked Up and Nowhere (reviewed elsewhere).
While Nowhere is a very, very, very dark comedy, The Doom Generation is just dark, reflecting the despair of directionless youth tossed through life and battered by forces beyond their control or understanding.
At the same time, The Doom Generation is gorily violent and bloody, but with most of the carnage shot so what you don't see and what you think you see increase the impact.

Assuming Amy and Jordan represent their generation, it contends that this generation is doomed to rape and emasculation because of the fascist powers that rule the world.
Yet the only way this generation seems to cope with this fact is by eating more junk food, putting on a smile, and moving on.
In the end, the doom and sin of the generation may be its inability to act.

 Doom-metal.com: What is Doom-metal?
Whilst the general public may think that all music belonging to this genre sounds very alike, if one takes the time to scrutinise the genre it is apparent that the real situation is very different from this.
To claim that Black Sabbath is a doom band would be misleading in that it would be akin to saying that all metal bands have doom influences because they depict the dark side of music.
However one misconception made by a lot of Stoner fans is the notion that pure Stoner rock or Stoner/Doom is the only form of Doom (sometimes referred to as "True Doom" by fans, but not to be confused with the "True Doom" as claimed by a small number of Traditional and Epic Doom-metal diehards).

Film Review - The Doom Generation
A breakthrough film that Araki's followers have been waiting for, Doom Generation is his biggest, most ambitious and most accomplished work.
The Doom Generation is also structured as an apocalyptic journey into the unknown--America's wastelands--but this time the road comedy is hallucinatory and psychedelic in a style reminiscent of Natural Born Killers, though blessedly lacking Oliver Stone's blatant message and obvious satire.
Stylishly and yet personally expressive, The Doom Generation is not only a turning point in Araki's career, it's also one of the few truly innovative films showcased in the l995 Sundance Festival.

Nor can we overlook the rise of an odd child within the Doom family, Sludge Doom; very heavy, miserable sounding Doom-metal that perhaps lacks the mournfull and emotions of Doom but fills those with pure filth, discust and anger.

I pointed out that that was a 1994 film, and he corrected himself by naming The Doom Generation as the worst film of 1995.
Araki hides much of the action with flickering lights that are probably intended to stun the viewer subliminally, though I think the ending could have had a bigger impact if the lights were omitted.
Ebert's advice, and I liked it more than he did, but we can both agree that The Doom Generation is a movie that is corrupt and depraved.

The Doom Generation is a strange, sad and ultimately poignant odyssey through a lost America.
The boys and girls of cinema have gone from being `The Pepsi generation' of Godard to the `Doom Generation' of Araki but not that much has changed.
When they hold up a store in Araki's film, they do it not so much out of desperation but out of agony and boredom, a bit like the robbery in `Band Of Outsiders', their faces tell you that they know they are going to die very soon and yet they go on with it.

 The Doom Generation
At this point, Araki's still playing the young punk filmmaker, and The Doom Generation is loud and snotty, with a cruel, icy sense of humor.
The biggest surprise in The Doom Generation is how seriously Araki starts to take these kids, who seem at first to have been set up as easy targets for his skewering of American youth, red, white, and blue.
But everything in The Doom Generation is just about right, and to my eyes, it makes a lot of what has passed for great filmmaking lately look mighty tired.

Made for a fraction of the cost of Oliver Stone's similarly themed Natural Born Killers, Gregg Araki's The Doom Generation is more persuasively outragous in its cultural satire, scarier in its violence, and more profound in its vision of a hate-fueled, media-drunk America seemingly determined to eat its young and dwell stupidly on their vengeance.
After veiwing "The Doom Generation" I can conclude that this film is in no where near as good as "Mysterious Skin".
I thought that the way the this film was shot was kind of cool and unique but I also thought that the camera angles and all-around visuals were somewhat hard to see, the lack of lighting made some of the shots so dark that you could only see the make-up on the girls face.

The Doom Generation Commentary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
: The Doom Generation is a rather unsubtle attempt to show us how empty, soulless, dehumanizing and pointless life is for children of the "lost" generation.
It bears a strong resemblance to a number of other films, like Wild at Heart and Thelma and Louise, with a healthy dose of Gen X flavor added.
The message that life for the Doom Generation is pointless, boring and dehumanizing gets driven into us with relentless ferocity, until it culminates with the only likable character in the story getting chopped up with pruning shears.

For rock and roll at its finest, they played several tracks off the very excellent, Doom Generation including personal favorite, “Screaming Pig F#*ker From Hell.” They also debuted a lot of new material from their forthcoming CD due in January, and broke out some Motorhead, Metallica and Iron Maiden.
Not a bad choice, although given that singer/bassman Al Mead played with the infamous GG Allin for a while, it would have been cool to hear “Drink, Fight and F#*k,” which Tearabyte has been known to do.

As in The Doom Generation, the characters' journey is as much metaphorical as literal.

It has some good points: 1) the cast is fairly amusing, but unfortunately, they're fairly amusing in other movies, 2) the cameos are fun to pick out, 3) some of the sets are interesting, and 4) there is that hip, out-of-proportion pictures thing going on in the cover art.
The bad points are easier to find, mostly because there are more of them: 1) the acting is subpar and that's being generous, 2) the plotting is juvenile, and 3) the jokes, which should be the saving grace in a movie like this one, aren't funny.
To add insult to injury, "The Doom Generation" presents itself as a ultra-hip, above-it-all masterpiece.

The general impression one is left with after this film is just how wonderful, by contrast, Repo Man, is. At times, this film tries for the same sort of dreary, surreal, "what's-the-point?" atmosphere, but it just doesn't pull it off.
For instance, in this film, the convenience store clerks always give the trio six dollars and sixty six cents in change.
(By contrast, it doesn't take a genius to venture a theory as to what it means in Repo Man when virtually all store products are generic brands.) It's the little details that bring-out the blandness of this piece of dreck.
