The one Veronique is Polish and dies singing, the other lives on in France but with a sense of having missed the one important connection in her life.
Modern life feeling impersonal is a classic theme of the twentieth century yet the way Kieslowski tells it it does not feel at all cliched, rather he breathes new life and new understanding into what it means to live in the modern world.
The double life of Veronique is a remarkable exploration of the feminine universe through the similarities of two women, one in Poland the other in France.

The Double Life of Veronique by Krzysztof Kieslowski can be interpreted many ways due to its complex narrative structure and minimalist approach to characterization.
In the film's final sequence a mirror image of Veronique embracing her father recalls the parallel lives of the two women.
The two women slip and fall on pavement at similar points in their stories, Weronique just before seeing Veronique and Veronique just before she is seen by the singer who witnessed Weronique's death.

Krzysztof Kieslowski's The Double Life of Véronique (originally titled La Double Vie de Véronique) might be the best film in the late director's accomplished oeuvre.
Irène Jacob, also the star of Red, handles a double role as two women cut from the same metaphysical cloth -- the Polish Veronika and the French Véronique.
Her presence as both women is at once whimsically childlike and sensually melancholic; relentlessly alluring, it is easy to see why she became Kieslowski's muse.

It's not a particularly new idea, that each of us has an exact double somewhere in the world, or that there might be some kind of psychic connection between the two — kindred spirits who are unaware of the other's existence.

Veronique is also on the road to a singing career, but, taking a cue from an inner feeling that is somehow connected to Veronika, she changes her life and heads in another direction.

Mostly captivating, Double Life's metaphysical meditation occasionally verges on silly self-absorption; at its worst, the movie's solemn search for profundities could almost be a parody of European artiness.
Lyrical and elliptical, the movie can also be read simply as an ode to its lead: Jacob's Veronique is clearly an idealized projection of feminine perfection, so perfect that Kieslowski had to make two of her.
