Clifton and Durdham Downs stretch from the spectacular cliffs of the Avon Gorge to the edge of the city's houses.
The adjacent Durdham Down was purchased from the Lords of the Manor of Henbury.

Bristol which is Saxon for “Bridge over Water” was given county status in 1373, and apart for a brief period between 1973 and 1993 when it was part of the county of Avon has been a county in its own right ever since.
On the Centre is the famous Hippodrome and Colston Hall, and adjoining the Centre is the docks.
The South West end of the Downs is Bristol Zoo, Avon Gorge, the suspension bridge (Bridge built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel – he also built the S S Great Britain and Temple Meads train station), and a small cave and Observatory, the cave leads down to the Gorge and is open to the public.
