The Dresden Dolls - Album Reviews
On the evidence of their debut album, this isn't a problem The Dresden Dolls are going face any time soon.
The songs on this album could easily be interpreted as a set of characters from a musical – from the screaming tantrum thrower in 'Girl Anachronism' to the drama queen on the verge of tears in 'Half Jack' to the spoiled, manipulative and quite frankly creepy little girl in 'Missing You'.

Boston's The Dresden Dolls seemed to come out of left field when their self-titled debut album began picking up steam via word-of-mouth and when "coin-operated boy" became a cult hit.
Luckily for The Dresden Dolls, with "Yes Virginia," (2006) the band make a sophomore album that takes up where the debut left off, yet also has its own signature and doesn't merely try to capture the style and spirit of its predecessor.
While the album is theatrical in nature, at times Palmer seems to break out of her theatrical persona, such as with the candid and sincere "Delilah" and the beautiful, lush "sing" in which Palmer states "life is no cabaret." This makes "Yes, Virginia," a more three-dimensional album compared to the debut.

The Dresden Dolls 'Yes, Virginia' reviewed on the official website of writer, Laura Hird
The first Dresden dolls album was a wonderful surprise.
The kind of idiosyncratic, single minded album that few other bands would have the guts or the inclination to produce - Mark E. Smith comes to mind - and although they were never going to sell a million, it was a treat in amongst the usual suspects and the mediocrity (Razorlight take a bow!).
As with the first album, most of the songs are concerned with the darker side of love / sex / relationships blah blah blah.

Lead singer Amanda Palmer brings an unlikely combination of influences to this release, and they range from Kurt Weill and Marlene Dietrich to goth rock, punk, and the riot grrrl movement.
Palmer has been greatly affected by the emotional catharsis of PJ Harvey, Courtney Love, and Tori Amos -- her performances can be very stream-of-consciousness -- but she has also been influenced by the cabaret of Germany's pre-Adolf Hitler Weimar Republic (although Palmer writes and sings in English exclusively on this album).
