DVD Verdict Review - The Duellists: Special Collectors Edition
Carradine almost did not appear in the film, as his Oscar-winning song "I'm Easy" was climbing the charts at the time, eventually to peak at number 17; the multi-talented star was forced to choose between the demands of his acting career and his budding success as a pop star.
Paramount may have slighted The Duellists on its initial theatrical release, and they may be the undisputed champions of the bare-bones release, but they have certainly changed their ways, at least long enough to create an excellent Special Collector's Edition DVD.
The Duellists is not perfect; one major flaw is the inclusion of heavy-handed voiceover narrations between the major episodes in the lives of D'Hubert and Feraud.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Duel
Benedict XIV decreed that duellists should also be denied burial by the Church even if they did not die on the duelling ground and had received absolution before death.
Hence it is easy to perceive that a duellist unjustifiably exposes both his own life and that of his fellow-man consequently is guilty of a wrongful assumption of the right of God, the Lord of life and death.
The duellist desires to avoid the loss of the respect of his peers and thus to retain his office and his income, or, as is said, to defend his honour and his social position.

The Duellists is loosely based upon Joseph Conrad's short work "The Duel" (1908) from Stories and Tales of Joseph Conrad, and follows the careers of two officers in Napoleon's 7th Hussars as they maintain their honor by fighting 6 duels over a span of years.
Each duel is woven together with the major historical battles and European occupations by Napoleon's forces, until the defeat of Napoleon and the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy puts an end to the officers' military careers, and brings them together for one final duel to the death.
The Duellists is the film "Enemy at the Gates" dreamt of becoming, with its theme of two men at war with each other within a war, but with a true main character and no straw-man romantic interest tossed in merely because Hollywood requires one.

The Duellists is based on the Joseph Conrad short story Duel, which is not surprising considering that there is not much plot in this 100 minute movie.
A nice addition to this segment is the insertion of some older interview footage taken from the time of the film's release, including some footage of the screenwriter, who is not heard from anywhere else on the disc.
As The Duellists was Ridley Scott's first commercial feature, it is appropriate that his first short film also be included.

Though Scott was not able to achieve what Kubrick had and acquire special lenses allowing him to actually shoot by candlelight, he and cinematographer Frank Tidy have admirably recreated the illusion of a room decorated by the light of a candle.
Though The Duellists was allotted a budget of merely $900,000, Ridley Scott utilized his experience and savvy as a commercial director to create a picture that looks much more expensive.
Now on DVD with an excellent film-like transfer, we are given a chance to recognize and appreciate the beginnings of a fantastic director whose visual flair is as impressive in his feature debut as it is in his later films.

The Duellists/The Riddle of the Sands
The Duellists was a 1977 film, notable in film history for being the debut feature of a young British director named Ridley Scott, who would later go on to create such classic pieces of cinema as Blade Runner, Alien and Thelma & Louise.
Presented in its entirety in the opening (but ultimately unused) cue 'The Duellists', the theme is a large-scale, lush, but poignant, as if the music itself knows that the bitter rivalry between Keitel and Carradine can only end in tragedy.
As with The Duellists, the thing which The Riddle of the Sands has going for it is the strength of its main theme, a powerful, lyrical melody which Blake freely admits was influenced by Wagner's Ring Cycle.

Unlike Blake's FLASH GORDON which went for thrills, THE DUELLISTS is intimate, dark and often drenched in melancholy.
Not all of THE DUELLISTS is smooth-sailing though -- there are moments of dissonance in "Cavalry Duel" and a portion of the album is devoted to suspence cues full of sustained and crashing cords (like the excellent "Russian Winter").
The strange connection here is that DUELLISTS director Ridley Scott had attached Blake to score ALIEN (the decision was made by 20th Century Fox however to hire Goldsmith instead).

Set in the early 1800s, "The Duellists" stars Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel as Armand d'Hubert and Gabriel Feraud, two officers in Napoleon's army who violently confront each other in sword duels over the course of 16 years.
There's no doubt "The Duellists" is a beautiful film in terms of cinematography and style, but Scott also presents some stunningly choreographed fight scenes.
While Scott began his career in the 1800s, essentially with "The Duellists," he has since traveled through film to many different time periods and themes -- from outer space to ancient Rome, from war to horror, and drama to suspense.

Ridley Scott's directorial debut, The Duellists, is no exception: It's a competent but slow-paced outing that offers no hint that Scott would soon be making exciting thrillers like Alien and Blade Runner.
To be fair, The Duellists (based on Conrad's The Duel) is a type of movie made often in the 1970s -- a low-tech but visually authentic historical drama.
The Duellists is not a bad film; the story is interesting, and the location scenes are well-chosen.
