The house was leased by the third Duke of Chandos.
After the death of James Brydges, the 3rd Duke of Chandos, the house passed to his second wife, Anne Eliza [Elletson].
Her estate was managed by trustees during her madness and, on her death on 20 January 1813 at Chandos House, her daughter Anna Eliza inherited the properties.

Thomas Grenville lived there for a while but after the Crown lease was renewed in 1783, Buckingham began to create a grander house, initially retaining R F Brettingham, who had worked at Grenville's previous residence of 9 Berkeley Square.
Buckingham House was sold in 1847 by the 2nd Duke of Buckingham and the effects auctioned by Christies.
That Buckingham House was built in 1702 for John Sheffield, Duke of Buckingham and was purchased by George III in 1761.

GEORGE NUGENT TEMPLE GRENVILLE, ISt marquess of Buckingham (1753-1813), was the second son of George Grenville, and was born on the 17th of June 1753.
His elder son, RICHARD GRENVILLE, ISt duke of Buckingham and Chandos (1976—1839), was one of the members of parliament for Buckinghamshire from 1797 to 1813, and, as Earl Temple, took an active part in politics.
In February 1813 he succeeded his father as marquess of Buckingham; and having married the only child of the 3rd duke of Chandos, he was created duke of Buckingham and Chandos in 1822.

CHANDOS The English title of Chandos began as a barony in 1554, and was continued in the family of Brydges (becoming a dukedom in 1719) till 1789.
In 1822 the dukedom was revived in connexion with that of Buckingham.
The 3rd duke's only daughter, Anna Elizabeth, who became Baroness Kinloss on her father's death, was married in 1796 to Richard Grenville, afterwards marquess of Buckingham; and in 1822 this nobleman was created duke of Buckingham and Chandos (see Buckingham, Dukes Of).

Chandos House, now a Grade 1 listed building, was designed and built by Robert and James Adam, the most prominent Scottish architects in Georgian Britain.
Chandos House was built speculatively, with monies from the Adam family and from the banker Sir George Colebrooke, another Adam client.
This allowed the Duke of Buckingham and Chandos (a descendant through marriage of the third Duke of Chandos) to acquire a 99-year lease on the property in 1866.
