Charles, 12th Earl and Duke of Shrewsbury, KG, Created Duke of Shrewsbury and Marquess of Alton in 1694.
Was a prominent statesman during the reigns of William and Mary, Queen Anne, and George I. He quit the Church of Rome and became a Protestant in 1679.
The current titles of Earl of Shrewsbury, Earl of Waterford, Earl Talbot, Viscount Ingestre, and Baron Talbot are all carried today by Charles Henry John Benedict Crofton Chetwynd Chetwynd-Talbot.

Thomas, son of John of Gaunt duke of Lancaster, was created by king Henry the fourth 5 July 1411 earl of Dorset, and by king Henry the fifth duke of Exeter, which titles became extinct at his death 27 December 1426.
Lodovic Stuart, duke of Lenox of the kingdom of Scotland, was created by king James the first 6 October 1612 baron Setrington and earl of Richmond, and a few years afterwards earl of Newcastle and duke of Richmond, which titles became extinct at his death 11 February 1623.

William III himself called Shrewsbury “the king of hearts”, the curmudgeonly Dean Swift said that he was “the finest gentleman we have” and at another time “the favourite of the nation”.
The duke, of course, was even younger; he became First Minister at the age of 28.
