Dukes of Stratosphear - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dukes of Stratosphear was a pseudonym used by the British rock band XTC in the late 1980s.
The two albums were released on a single CD under the title Chips from the Chocolate Fireball: An Anthology simultaneous with the release of the second vinyl album.
Under the additional pseudonym of Terry and the Lovemen, XTC appeared on its own tribute album A Testimonial Dinner and thanked the Dukes of Stratosphear for the loan of their instruments.

Prindle Record Reviews - The Dukes of Stratosphear
Despite two decades of seperation, the Dukes effortlessly maintain the quirky, acid-freshness exhibited (invented?) on Floyd's Piper at the Gates of Dawn.
In later interviews,Andy claimed that the Dukes had all died in a horrible bus crash,so that no more Dukes albums could be expected.
Well, in a way they did form "Dukes of Stratosphear" since the line-up included a fourth member (their producer I think) when XTC at that time were a three-piece band.

The Dukes are, in actuality, XTC doing a mock/retro-psychedelic thing.
So it's odd that their most successful work, in my opinion, was a joke of sorts, a brief side-project done under the alter ego The Dukes of Stratosphear.
Chips From The Chocolate Fireball (the cd includes the 1987 lp Psonic Psunspot and the earlier EP 25 O'Clock) manages the remarkable feat of being both a parody of late-60's psychedelia and a heartfelt celebration of it.

XTC created the Dukes of Stratosphear almost on a lark, as an excuse to play the kind of music they grew up listening to and playing.
The Dukes released two records between 1985 and 1987 and they are both compiled in their entirety on Chips from the Chocolate Fireball.
The Dukes released an EP and an LP, which are both compiled on this record.

XTC Forum - Hey What About The Dukes of Stratosphear?
One thing I noticed about the Dukes was they had the advantage of being a later psychedelic band with access to more advanced equipment to perfect the sound and capture that quintessential substance that is psychedelia.
it would be nice if they would remaster the dukes releases on two cds with all the original artwork from all the different releases, much like rykodisc (usa) and emi (uk) did with bowie's 'man who sold the world' in 1989.
When I first heard of the Dukes in 1991 (shortly before Nonsuch was released), I immediately bought "Chips" and I loved it from the very start.

The Dukes are really XTC - they use this name when recording 60's influenced psychedelic music, a bit of a tribute and a bit tongue in cheek.
With alter-ego names in place and cloaked in packaging from the ripe era of psychedelic overload, many people didn't even know this was indeed XTC (which was the intent and a sort of goal of theirs), rather a lost nugget from the '60s.

Chips from the Chocolate Fireball by the Dukes of Stratosphear--vocalist Sir John Johns, bassist The Red Curtain, guitarist Lord Cornelius Plum and drummer EIEI Owen--was a cunning ruse, an academically brilliant pastiche executed by Swindon's XTC in the mid-1980s.
There are a lot of bands out there that just take a sound and call it that, and then they're hip and cool, and then abandon it when it doesn't sell the units it used to.
The Dukes went into this loving the Sixties and its songs, and paid very honourable tribute, and came up with some really classic songs of their own.

The Dukes of Stratosphear : Psonic Psunspot - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Psonic Psunspot, XTC's second go-round as their psychedelic alter egos the Dukes of Stratosphear, sounds a bit more like an XTC record than their previous experiment in the lysergic, the 25 O'Clock, though that isn't a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination.
But if many of these cuts sound like XTC tunes, they're great XTC tunes; "Vanishing Girl" is one of Moulding's best pure pop songs, and "You're a Good Man Albert Brown" at once gives Sgt.
Pepper what for and works as a sequel to "Respectable Street." And when the Dukes do let their freak flag fly, the results are lots of fun, especially the Syd Barrett parody "Have You Seen Jackie?" and the propulsive "You're My Drug." Like wow, man. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide
