I got hooked on Dune many years ago as a teenager, right around the time Lynch's movie was coming out, and I remember flipping through the Dune Encyclopedia in a bookstore before I read the books.
The authors of the three Dune prequels (House Atreides, House Harkonnen, and House Corrino) have repudiated The Dune Encyclopedia and it is very unlikely to be reprinted because parts are inconsistent with the prequels.
The Dune encyclopedia should be read by all Dune fans as it provides some answers to the questions raised in the first four books of the series.

  dune - HighBeam Encyclopedia
Dunes that are not stabilized by vegetation have a tendency to migrate, driven by the prevailing wind.
Transverse dunes usually form where wind blows quite constantly from one direction across expanses of loose sand; the windward slope is typically gentle, and the lee side, where the sand blown over the crest seeks its natural angle of repose, is steep.
One value of dunes is their absorption of rain, which helps to raise the level of the water table and thus produces oases in some areas and provides accessible sources of water through rather shallow wells.

This is being done with the full approval of the owner of the DUNE copyright, the Herbert Limited Partnership.

 What's So Great About Dune?
Dune would still have been a viable, albeit less memorable, novel if Herbert had focused on the politics of the vast, interplanetary Imperium to the exclusion of the everyday life of his desert planet.
Dune is filled with the history, laws and customs of the Imperium, each new bit of information contributing a brush-stroke of nuance to Herbert's sprawling canvas where perspective ranges in dizzying variety from the microcosmic world of flukes and water droplets to the cosmic pageantry of galactic history.
As for the reprints themselves, the Dune universe continues to gain new fans despite the fact that the cliffhanger ending of Chapterhouse: Dune, the sixth book, would be left permanently unresolved by Herbert's death.

Dune: Arrakis, (derived from the Arabic name ar-rāqiṣ, "the dancer", originally a star-name for Mu Draconis) later Rakis (known colloquially as "Dune") is a fictional desert planet featured in the Dune novels by Frank Herbert, where it is the home of the Fremen (Zensunni wanderers) and later, the Imperial Capital under Muad'Dib's Empire.
Dune is set far in the future amidst a sprawling feudal galactic empire where planetary fiefdoms are controlled by noble Houses that owe allegiance to the Imperial House Corrino.

Dune mentions the religion of the Zensunni, presumably a combination of "Zen" and "Sunni." The word "Sunni" is the nickname for ahl al-sunnah wa-l-jamaa ("The people who follow the traditions of Muhammad and his tribe", Arabic).
Dune was strongly influenced by Lawrence: Paul is the messianic man of two tribes leading the Jihad, the Beduins are the Fremen, the Harkonnens are the Turks, the Sardaukar are German Troops, and the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV represents both the German government and the British crown.
Dune fans may be unpleasantly surprised to discover that (unless we assume that Brian Herbert is flat-out lying in his father's biography, which seems unlikely), Frank Herbert was emotionally and even physically abusive to his children.

Pudding Time!: Stop the Inanity: Dune: Butlerian Jihad   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Core to "Dune" is society's aversion to "thinking machines." This aversion is attributed to the lasting impact of "The Butlerian Jihad," a religious upheaval in reaction to the near extinction of humans at the hand of sentient computers.
As such, it's certainly an area of fascination for Dune fans: The sort of cataclysmic intensity with which such a thing would have played out to leave its mark on humanity 10,000 years later would have to be awesome, and surely the story behind such a thing would be epic.
Anyone who cared enough about "Dune" to own the encyclopedia probably read the entries pretty closely and figured out pretty quickly that some of the content was meant to be a humourous jape on both over-earnest fans and modern academics.

The encyclopedia also includes explanations of the armies, major schools (Bene Gesserit, Mentats, Sword Masters of Ginaz, etc.), and major industries (including the spice melange), as well as descriptions of future technologies and artwork on the major characters and concepts of the novels.
