archibald primrose, 5th earl of rosebery - Article and Reference from OnPedia.com
Rosebery took his seat in the House of Lords on coming of age.
Rosebery became a leader of the Liberal Imperialist faction of the Liberal Party, and in Gladstone's third (February - July 1886) and fourth (August 1892 to March 1894) administrations, Rosebery served as Foreign Secretary.
Rosebery resigned as leader of the Liberal Party on October 8, 1896, to be succeeded by Harcourt, and gradually moved further and further from the mainstream of the party, supporting the Boer War and opposing Irish Home Rule, a position which prevented him from participating in the Liberal government that returned to power in 1905.

 Dalmeny House Edinburgh
Perhaps the best-known inhabitant of Dalmeny House was Archibald Philip, 5th Earl of Rosebery (1847-1929).
Rosebery also changed the face of British election campaigning, by applying the techniques of "electioneering" he had seen in America- with its mass meetings, parades and general excitement- to the Midlothian campaign of 1880, which saw Gladstone returned as Prime Minister.
Winston Churchill described Rosebery as the natural leader who never completely accepted the invitation to lead; his interest in statecraft was frustrated by his dislike for the everyday business of politics.

Rosebery is perhaps the least well-known of the Liberal Prime Ministers, having the misfortune to serve in the office only as the era of Gladstonian Liberalism was definitively drawing to a close.
Rosebery's declared ambitions were to marry an heiress, own a horse that won the Derby and be Prime Minister.
Rosebery declined on both occasions, believing that his management of Gladstone's Midlothian campaign would be interpreted as an attempt to further his personal ambition rather than as a commitment to Liberal ideals and the party.
