Isaac Asimov FAQ, Part 1/4   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
However, since Asimov often did not count as "his" books those on which a publisher merely slapped his name, and because a number of his books were published in limited editions by obscure presses, these sources cannot be taken as complete.
Asimov was born (officially) January 2, 1920, in the town of Petrovichi (pronounced peh-TRUV-ih-chee), then in the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic (czarist Russia no longer existed, while the USSR hadn't formed yet) and now in Russia.
Asimov started working in his parents' Essex Street candy store in 1929, when his mother became unable to work a full day due to her third pregnancy, and learned the steady work habits that would stay with him for the rest of his life.

Asimov discovered that he was acrophobic at the New York World's Fair in 1940, when he took his date and first love Irene on a roller coaster, expecting that it would cause her to cling to him in fear and give him a chance to kiss her.
Asimov was a teetotaler in later life, mainly because in all of his experiences with drinking alcoholic beverages, just one or two drinks were sufficient to get him drunk.

Review of The Early Asimov   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
SF was a pulp field in the 1930’s and early 1940’s, and the field’s heritage shows in these early stories; some don’t rate very highly even by the comparatively low standards of the time (“Half-Breeds on Venus” is truly, truly awful).
Asimov hated this story and considered it his worst among those he allowed to be anthologized, but it really isn’t all that bad.
On a number of levels, then, this is worthwhile: as a history of Asimov, as a history of his writing, as a history of the very field inasmuch as Campbell molded sf even while he molded Asimov.

In reality, this was due to the magazine editor Asimov worked with at the time (John W. Campbell) disliking robots in science fiction, and discouraging (maybe forbidding) Asimov from including them.
