Filling the Void: Verne, Wells, and Lem
Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864) is just such an exploration of “insideness,” except that here the interior world is the non-human world, a realm of subterranean galleries, caverns, and seas, and here rather than being the place of enclosed safety the interior world becomes an immensity, a fearful abyss.
Through the heat ray and its fires, the color is also associated with the pattern of references to temperature—both extremes of temperature are deadly: the Earth is neither hot nor cold but benevolently warm—and thus with the cosmic theme, reminding us of the narrow range of conditions in which life is possible.
The earthly chasm thus opens onto a different kind of imaginative space from the astronomical void; at the bottom of the bottomless abyss is the region not of transcendence but of immanence, the locus in which all knowledge, all being, all power are immediately present.

 Ant hill, housing the commune
In the typical beginning of an ant community by the single fertilized queen, the first act of the incipient foundress is to scoop out and heap around her, in earth or wood, a cell whose diameter is somewhat greater than the length of her own body.
These ants, besides nesting in the earth near the surface and under stones, are apt to choose a site in a heap of stones on an old stump, or in the debris of fallen and decaying logs.
The simplest type of ant architecture, as we have seen, is a single cave excavated in the earth, or in wood, or formed by detritus cemented by salivary secretions.
