The Edge of Night - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Edge of Night was a long-running American television soap opera.
The Edge of Night was unique among daytime soap operas in focusing on crime, rather than domestic and romantic matters.
When the show moved to 2:30 PM in 1972, the show slid from a solid #2 in the Nielsen ratings to near the bottom of the pack, and it has been hypothesized that this drop was due to the exodus of many male viewers who could not watch earlier in the afternoon.

EDGE was cancelled because the show became too expensive to produce.
EDGE moved from CBS to ABC-TV in 1975 because P&G wanted to expand its top-rated serial "As the World Turns" to one-hour, and CBS needed to drop a half-hour of airtime to accomodate the expansion.
The result was "The Edge of Night", with the characters of Mike Karr and Sara Lane patterned after Perry Mason and Della Street.

Edge jumped the shark in late 1981 early 1982 when it is apparent that ABC and/or Proctor and Gamble asked Henry Slesar to "dumb down" the show and we ended up with stories such as "The Martyr of Eden", "The scam against Raven".
EDGE was a soap that I could have drunk beer while watching (ATWT was the coffee soap).
EDGE stayed pretty true to its premise and never really tried to re-tool or recreate itself with any drastic changes except dealing with the exit of head writer Henry Slesar, which was the biggest hiccup.
