The Element of Crime: The Criterion Collection (1984)
About ten minutes into The Element of Crime, I turned to the friend with whom I watched the film and declared, "This is one messed-up movie!" For the record, I used a phrase other than "messed-up", but I decided to alter the actual term in case any sensitive eyes read this review.
As I perused other opinions of Element, I noticed that some felt it looked like Blade Runner, but I didn't really agree; yes, both worlds show us wet, dilapidated places, but BR goes for more of a corporate-future look, with all of the neon and hovercraft.
Element isn't for everybody, but those who go for warped film noir will likely find it interesting.

Forbrydelsens element (1984)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Unfortunately, by setting "The Element of Crime" in such a vaguely distant future (I can only guess this is Europe in nuclear winter) and pacing the film to be so hypnotically listless, there really is no heart to this film.
The only context "The Element of Crime" has is someone else's nightmare.
The screenplay seems to be ahead of its time, as there are many depressingly cynical one-liners that David Fincher wish he had put in "Fight Club." That is the only hint of humor at all to break the oppressive feel of this film, and it is very very dark and nihilistic humor at that.

Simply stated, the Crime Stoppers concept is based on the principle that someone -- other than the criminal -- has information that can solve or prevent a crime.
Crime Stoppers has been a proven, effective crime deterrent, since the idea was conceived in Albuquerque, New Mexico nearly 30 years ago.

Trier’s first film, The Element Of Crime, is perhaps his most personal film and the most willing to acknowledge the futility of logical critique.
In a way Element sounds like the poems of a young artist that claim their work is beyond critical understanding and rage against the theories and logic that make meaning out of art.
Thankfully, Element is more than a childish rampage against The Man, instead of satisfying the mind it indulges the senses, allowing it to be a film that is experienced, if not understood.

The Element Of Crime stands out for two reasons: its monotonous narration which adds almost electrifyingly to the gloomy setting which is tinted in sepia (a very brownish tone) with the exception of the TV sets that have a bluish glare virtually commanding the attention of the audience.
The world Von Trier concocted as the setting in the future is immensely depressing, and the actions of his characters are similarly removed from the future commercials try to offer us.
What is also most important is grain and detail, a mix that in this case is crucial as the grain needs to be intact to avoid the detrimental effects of smearing and static noise patterns, both caused by overly excessive digital filtering.

It may prove confounding to anyone expecting a more conventional narrative, but The Element of Crime--the debut feature of Danish visionary Lars von Trier--marks the arrival of an audaciously original talent; the film is deeply personal in its inspirations yet richly informed by a pure love of cinema.
Multilayered, deliberately paced, and atmospheric in the extreme (which less appreciative viewers may find intolerable), The Element of Crime elicits a dream state that is simultaneously oppressive and visually unforgettable, crammed with symbolic subtleties and cinematic references that can only be fully absorbed over multiple viewings.
ELEMENT OF CRIME is the confession, under hypnosis, of a german policeman to his aegyptian psychiatrist in Cairo.

Using The Element Of Crime, a textbook written by his now-unstable mentor (Esmond Knight), Elphick places himself in the mind of the killer and quickly discovers he has more in common with him than he would care to admit.
The story is the stuff of countless direct-to-video thrillers, and Von Trier's vision of Euro-decadence (complete with pit-dwelling prostitutes) is considerably less sophisticated and less wickedly funny than the one in Zentropa.

I also recognize that my criticisms of "Crime" resemble the criticisms of those who didn't like "Zentropa," but I think that film is far more accessible while still being experimental and visually fascinating.
