Chemical element - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The atomic mass of an element, A, is measured in unified atomic mass units (u) is the average mass of all the atoms of the element in an environment of interest (usually the earth's crust and atmosphere).
The 23 elements not found on earth are derived artificially; the first purportedly synthesized element was technetium, in 1937, although the trace amounts of naturally occurring technetium were not known then.
All artificially derived elements are radioactive with short half-lives so that any such atoms that were present at the formation of Earth are extremely likely to have already decayed.

The elements are listed generally in the order in which they were first isolated as the pure element, rather than as a compound (some such as boron were known to be elements decades before they could be isolated from their compounds).
The next element discovered when Mosander showed that the cerium isolated in 1803 by Berzelius was actually a mixture of cerium, lanthanum and so-called didymium (which was not actually one element, and was resolved into two in 1885).
The elements labelled as "synthetic" are unstable, with a half-life so "short" relative to the age of the earth that any atoms of that element that may have been present when the earth formed, have long since completely decayed away.

The Elements (song) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"The Elements" (1959) is a song by Tom Lehrer that recites the names of all the chemical elements that were known at the time of writing, up to number 102, nobelium.
The song is sung to the tune of Sir Arthur Sullivan's "Major General's Song" ("I am the very model of a modern major-general...") from The Pirates of Penzance.
As a note, the final rhyme of "Harvard" and "discovered" is delivered in an exaggerated parody of a Boston accent.

AN EVENING (WASTED) WITH TOM LEHRER - 4. The Elements
The tune is that of The Major-General's Song, by Sir Arthur Sullivan, from Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates Of Penzance.
The Elements was an attempt to top the song Tschaikowsky, by Ira Gershwin and Kurt Weill, which Danny Kaye sang in the show Lady in the Dark, rattling off the names of 50 Russian composers at lightning speed.
Dates given are the year that the element was first created, though in many cases, the final name was not decided until years later, and alternate or temporary names were affixed to some of them before the final name was settled.

 Song Leaders Resources 2
While most songs are written so that each part falls into the middle of the natural range for people accustomed to singing that part, many songs push the envelope towards either the high or low range; pitching farther in that direction will cause notes to be unsingable.
After announcing the song, and while the other worshippers are turning the pages to that song, announce what will happen (unless it's another song); this will notify the persons chosen for that part of the service that they're "on deck," so to speak.
It's not necessary to precede each song with an announcement of the stanzas to be sung, and since after starting you may encounter a very good reason for changing the selection on-the-fly, it's better not to announce them.

 Fíriel's Song
In Fíriel's Song, this word normally used for "autumn" seems to be used with a wider reference: the "autumn" or "fading" of the world, the End drawing near.
When Tolkien wrote Fíriel's Song, he seems to have used the following grammatical rules when forming future tenses: If the stem of the verb ends in a vowel, lengthen it and add the ending -va: hence antáva from anta here, and yéva (-iéva) "will be" from ye (-ie) "is" in lines 10 and 11.
Since Tolkien elsewhere in Fíriel's Song uses the shorter ending -va, it may be that he thought of qeluva as the stem qel- with the ending -va + a connecting vowel u when he wrote this song.

An astonishing feat of ingenuity - a perfectly rhymed, perfectly metrical parody of 'The Major-General's Song' from Gilbert & Sullivan's 'Pirates of Penzance' [1].
He also sang his parodies at coffeehouses and student gatherings throughout the Cambridge, Massachusetts area; as demand for an album of his songs increased, he spent $15 on studio time to cut Songs by Tom Lehrer, a ten-inch record privately pressed in an edition of 400 copies.
