Topic: Elephant Six collective

The Elephant Six Collective - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Elephant Six Collective were a group of American musicians who spawned some of the most notable independent bands of the 1990s, including the Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, the Apples in Stereo and of Montreal.
From there on in, most of the bands were signed to major record labels and the recording company as an entity slowly deteoriated until the collective called it quits, due to difficulties in recording and lack of organization, in 2002.
The bands of the collective have since all moved on to various labels and projects of their own, though many are still friends and even tour together under various guises.

Transistor Six - Johnny Where's My Purse? - almost cool music review
Not only does she record her own music as Transistor Six, but she does wonderful little drawings as well, which comprise the art for the release, as well as graphics on her website.
Lyrically, the track is as bizarre as something you'd get from the Elephant Six collective, focusing on a boy with a head so big he picks up radio signals.
Despite a couple tracks that don't work quite as well, the album is full of clever construction and music, and although it was recorded on a computer, it hums along with a nice lo-fi feel that works well given the style of music.

The Essex Green: The Long Goodbye - PopMatters Music Review
The Elephant Six Collective are like those super smart, witty, talented but eccentric friends we all have.
Since the Essex Green, like most of their Elephant Six counterparts, deny the existence of the last 30 years of music, you could be sure they were not headed towards the '80s disco and new wave revival currently streaming out of Brooklyn.
Essex Green should embrace the pavement beneath their feet, the taxis on the corner, the sounds that are making the kids shuffle this way and that, instead of falling back on the smells of the cow pastures back home.

Which is strange, for they're possibly the Collective's most prolific act -- and when you're talking about the E6, that's quite an accomplishment indeed.
We're putting on two little one act plays during the set, and last night three of the six members of the band had never even heard one of them, and had to actually come on stage and act it out, and one of (the plays) kind of turned into...well, it didn't work out.
If you make a record that sounds like a psychedelic sixties pop record, if you're not part of the Elephant Six you'll be accused of trying to rip it off, and if you are they'll say you're not as good as Jeff Mangum.

Indeed, the best pop songs are often the most difficult to discuss rationally, those indispensable not for their formal inventiveness but for their ability to tap directly into the intangible realm of human memory and emotion.
In the mid-to-late 90s, Athens, Georgia's Elephant Six collective established themselves as a group of artists with a shared interest in expressing the inexpressible through pop music.
The Elephant Six Collective is known largely for their reverence towards classic pop music, and Dusk at Cubist Castle inevitably draws comparisons to The Beatles and Beach Boys.

One of the principal brigades from the potentially legendary Elephant Six collective, the Apples second LP is an intentional step away from all the electronic psychedelia of their debut.
By shedding their analog synth-coats for bare-chested organs and straight up guitar work, the Apples hoped to recover their pop aspirations from orbit, and bring them to ground in kinder, gentler pastures.
That said and that accomplished, the great promise of this collection collapses somewhat beneath it's own raison d'etre after a time.
