Edward Elgar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Elgar's Symphony No. 1 (1908) was given one hundred performances in its first year, and in 1911, the year of the completion of his Symphony No. 2, he had the Order of Merit bestowed upon him.
Elgar lived in the village of Kempsey from 1923 to 1927, during which time he was made Master of the King's Musick.
Elgar's sketches for his third symphony were elaborated in the 1990s by the composer Anthony Payne.

Elgar, Edward William - Musical Biographies
The elder Elgar was a partner in a music-selling firm, was the organist of St. George's Church in Worcester for thirty-seven years, and played the violin in the orchestra of the Three Choir Festivals.
Elgar presupposes familiarity with the Scriptures in his hearers, bringing out in The Apostles only such points as are of salient interest or dramatic value; and this lack of minor details may have been confusing to some of his critics.
Elgar's variations for orchestra was given at Monte Carlo during December, 1907, by the Lamoreux Orchestra, and received very favorable comment in French journals.

Britten was only twenty and Elgar exactly twice that age when they did their revisions, but the principle is the same, and the materials in both cases were in existence by the time each composer was twelve years old.
Though self-taught as a composer, he had good teachers on several instruments: he mastered piano and violin as a small child, picked up knowledge of the organ from his father's professional work, and had begun to add viola, cello, and bassoon to his conquests before he was ten.
Elgar was unerring." In this respect as in others, the child was clearly father to the man.

Elgar - His Music : Cello Concerto - Jacqueline du Pré: The concerto's consummate interpreter?
Elgar's concerto had an immediate attraction for her, and it would become the work she performed more than any other.
The next morning Jackie called her sister and said, "Hil, I'm in love, I'm in love." The two saw each other as much as possible over the next few months, despite their busy schedules, and in May they were married in Jerusalem.
Du Pré conveys all of Elgar's yearning, tenderness and defiant despair, and Barbirolli's accompaniment is almost telepathic in its response to each fluctuation of tempo and tone colour.

PMC ESSAYS: Herter - Elgar's Polonia
Elgar, however, was not the first composer to have written a work entitled "Polonia".
[8] In fact, it was Elgar's composition which became a source of consolation and inspiration for one of Poland's greatest composers and conductors of the second half of the 20th century - Andrzej Panufnik (1914-1990).
Elgar's compassion for the Poles' tragic suffering during the war served as an example for other English composers to make their own Polish musical statements in kind.

 ELGAR - The Elgar Trail
Indeed, like most of us, Elgar detested the upheaval and disruption of moving house and left the bulk of the work - the finding and viewing of suitable properties, negotiating the lease or purchase, organising the packing, removal and unpacking - to his wife Alice.
While Elgar claimed to have composed his wind quintet music during sermons in the organ loft at St George's church, it seems improbable, given the effort required, that he could have done so and therefore likely that many of the compositions from around 1880 were composed in sister Pollie's house.
Elgar found the countryside - the peace and quiet, the views, sounds and smells - inspiring and, early in 1898, began to look for a cottage in the countryside to use as a retreat from the pressures and disturbances of Malvern.

It is based on a true story of wealthy English-German twin sisters raised in St. Petersburg who move to southwest Finland with their family after the 1917 revolution.
In conversation with real outsiders, the vocal lines are more realistic give-and-take; but when, near the start of the second act, the sisters share a dream, two men in the dream sing a duet as sinuous and expressive as the music for the sisters themselves.
The sisters wind up in a half-waking, half-dreamlike state ("It is time--it is time to go, time to know/ Everything is prepared, the veil falls off") with friends and family from the past arriving, and they all dance out into the moonlight.

Virtual Urth - Hilary and Jackie Reviewed By Jill Cozzi
The story of the two musician sisters is one of a relationship that is both close and adversarial, and therefore emblematic of the conflicts that characterize the interactions between many pairs of sisters.
Hilary DuPré is portrayed as a rising young musician when her younger sister Jacqueline eclipses her achievements and goes on to become the toast of classical music fans all over Europe.
The story is so potentially riddled with cliches (the sister who chooses a glamorous career envying the one who chose a life of quiet domesticity and vice versa; the horrifying-but-noble death from a disease we all fear) that it is a stunning achievement that this film avoids seeming maudlin or hackneyed.

The marches that Elgar wrote, whether for public occasions or as an incidental part of other works, represents only one aspect of his achievement as a composer.
Forty years after writing the tunes for a children's play about age, youth and escapism to fairyland, for performance in the family with his brothers and sisters, Elgar refashioned them into the two suites known as The Wand of Youth, from which 'Wild Bears' continues to enjoy a separate existence as a popular concert encore.
With its tender, wistful moods and restrained scoring, the Nursery Suite of 1930 is Elgar's final evocation to childhood.
