Waltz comments and history from Donald Daniel
As the waltz form grew, it developed into sequences of dances, and in the ''Fledermaus'' music, which is not all waltz-time by any means, the transition from one idea to the next is calculated with a naturalness few other composers have come close to.
They were all thirsty for waltzes, polkas, mazurkas, marches, galops, opera quadrilles and, later, indigenous operettas to dance to at pleasure gardens, at carnival balls and at court; to whistle, to hum, to sing; to grind out on barrel organs or play on the pianoforte or harmonium at home.
The emperor slept in a single iron cot (in which he also died in 1916) and was usually at his desk in his gloomy office by 5 A.M., signing documents.

THE WALTZ, history of and beauty of the waltz
As they waltzed around on the darker side of the room, the kissing and the hugging became still bolder.
It was the dance of the new Romantic Period after the Napoleonic Wars, and the contemporaries of the first waltzes were highly shocked at the eroticism of this dance in which a lady clung to her partner, closed her eyes as in a happy dream, and glided off as if the world had disappeared.
These new waltz melodies could trace their ancestry back to the beer gardens of early eighteenth century Vienna, and to the rural inns and tavern situated on the outskirts of Vienna and on the banks of the Danube River.

 Waltz
Today, waltz takes many forms, generally dictated by the character and culture of the music to which it is danced.
By 1833, Father Strauss was so popular that Heinrich Laub wrote "The Strauss waltzes are to the Viennese what the Napoleonic victories were to the French." By this time, Strauss's stylings were so unique, incorporating much more innovation than Lanner, that he was hailed by the Viennese as a waltz king in his own right.
Hearing his stories, the legend of Viennese waltzing and the reality of the music at hand became one for me. Strauss summarized the feeling in the name of one of his famous waltzes, Vienna Blood.

It comes closest when Richard Haydn (as the old Emperor Franz Joseph - possibly his best straight acting job/though his performance as a sadistic nobleman in FOREVER AMBER is close to it)tells Bing Crosby why the marriage between him and Joan Fontaine would fail.
It was not on the scale of THE EMPEROR WALTZ, but it is better remembered and enjoyed, and gave Fontaine a memorably tragic character.
As for THE EMPEROR WALTZ, watch it for Haydn's fine performance, Crosby's singing and comic moments (when he turns a phonograph into a 19th Century berry juicer, which is a lovely little scene), and Roland Culver's social plotting.

The introduction of the Waltz was the scandal of 19th century English society.
Fortunately the grace and beauty of the Waltz were noticed, and English society, so quick to denounce the dance, eventually “embraced” it.
Johann Strauss can be credited with the persistence of the Waltz in mainstream ballroom dancing with his fast paced Waltz compositions that paved the way for the quicker Viennese style.

The Hesitation Waltz is a variation of the Boston waltz around 1880.
One of the leading exponents of the Hesitation in the 1910s was Maurice Mouvet who had a Hesitation Waltz song dedicated to him with the Castles following the way.
The hesitation waltz merged with the Boston and today is just a variation of the Waltz and is one popular choice of the traditional 'First Dance' songs used in Weddings.

The "Waltz Into Spring" concert was one of the best attended in years, despite the sunny weather outside.
The second half of the program was all waltzes, except for the Radetzky encore and the famous "Pizzicato Polka" of Johann Strauss Jr.
In this performance it enhanced the waltzes themselves and tied the whole suite together with its recapitulation at the climax.

Billy Wilder’s The Emperor Waltz is all about Viennese royalty and high society, and how an American traveling salesman can go from being the proverbial bull in a china shop to an honored personage.
We are treated to sections from the Emperor Waltz, not surprisingly, but we also hear just as much (or so it seems) of “Deutschland, Deutschland uber alles,” which isn’t nearly as pleasant.

When Dr. Burney in 1805 described the waltz as a “riotous modern invention”, whose very name implied “to wallow, welter, tumble down or roll in the dirt or mire”, he could just as easily have been denouncing rock 'n' roll in 1956.
In 1844, Johann Strauss Sohn, who was born the same year as his dad's band, formed one of his own, the key step in his transformation from bank clerk to Waltz King, and embarked on a career which was to elevate the waltz from the coffee house (c.f.
Thus the introduction to the Emperor Waltz (or Kaiser-Walzer, if you want to be picky), written in honour of Franz Josef in 1888, is in a march-like 2/4 giving it a regal, even pompous feel.

Co-star Joan Fontaine, better known for heavy, serious roles, demonstrates adaptability that fits neatly into the lighter demands and she definitely scores with charm and talent as the Crosby foil.
Multiple functions of Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder on Waltz have given film an infectious quality that surmounts the gorgeously apt trappings against which is projected the fable of an American travelling phonograph salesman and his dog who crash the court of the emperor.
