 The Empire Strikes Back
Until I read Empire, by Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri, I would never have believed that a postmodernist paean to Italian anarcho-syndicalism could be presented by its publishers as a defense of "the idealism of the Founders and Abraham Lincoln," and of the universal validity of the US Constitution.
As for its vision of a modern world "empire," this is not without interest as a portrait of certain aspects of "globalization," but the authors' attempts to define this picture as an "empire," and to distinguish "empire" both from "imperialism" and from contemporary American hegemony are strained, to say the least.
It is difficult to resist the conclusion that this curious choice of the word "empire" as a name for these patterns of globalization reflects the new modishness of empire as a subject--as witnessed by the number of books now appearing on this theme.

Filmtracks: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (John Williams)
When discussing themes in The Empire Strikes Back, it's hard not to become fixated on the "Imperial March," the theme devised by Williams to represent the Galactic Empire as a whole and Lord Vader on a personal level.
Also gracing the score for The Empire Strikes Back is "Yoda's Theme," a benign and touching theme for wisdom and restraint, and the lovely love theme for "Han Solo and the Princess" that weaves in and out throughout the entire score.
When you saw The Empire Strikes Back for the first time, you got the feeling that damn near everything was going wrong --as it should be-- and part of that feeling was the ambience of a relentless uphill struggle created by Williams' score.

The Empire Strikes Back is, technically speaking, even better than the original, with more action and a lot more character building scenes (which are also extremely funny).
The latter addition is breathtaking; the former is a curiosity, but it's hard to judge whether the scene is made more or less effective by a better done monster that's less elusive and mysterious.
Nevertheless, Empire is as scintillating as it ever was, likely more so, and it's value just as raw entertainment, let alone an example of expert filmmaking, is irreplaceable.
