Science fiction developed and boomed in the 20th century, as the deep penetration of science and inventions into society created an interest in literature that explored technology's influence on people and society.
Although normally associated with the gothic horror genre, the novel introduces science fiction themes such as the use of technology for achievements beyond the scope of science at the time, and the alien as antagonist, furnishing a view of the human condition from an outside perspective.
John Clute writes that science fiction at the turn of the century can be understood in two ways- "a vision of the triumph of SF as a genre and as a series of outstanding texts which figured to our gaze the significant futures that, during those years, came to pass...

The End of Science Fiction: When Technological Extrapolation Hits A Wall Across the Future
Science fiction, as a genre of popular fiction, can trace its roots as far back as the 2nd century AD, where fantastical worlds were conjured up in order to comment on current beliefs.
[Science Fiction] is a descendant of the type of prose fiction sometimes referred to as Lucianic Satire (after Lucian of Samosata, a Greek writer of the 2nd century AD).
The term "science fiction" didn't come along until pulp magazine editor Hugo Gernsback used the word "scientifiction" in April 1926 to describe a "Jules Verne, H. Wells and Edgar Allan Poe kind of story." The somewhat derogatory "sci-fi" was coined in the 1950s, by analogy with hi-fi.

David Pringle's The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Science Fiction sums it up: "fiction which tends to the fantastic but also puts considerable emphasis on the discussion and dramatization of ideas"; to which should be added: with no recourse to the supernatural.
January's "Essential Science Fiction Library" isn't a survey of what SF fans have on their shelves, or a scholarly list of important works, but a compilation of fiction intended to capture curious readers' imaginations and inspire further investigation.
Reed's fiction is the distilled essence of SF: a perfect balance of speculative science, psychological insight, social extrapolation, dynamic storytelling, emotional relevance, sense of wonder and poetic inspiration.

Greenwood Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and Fantasy
What becomes very apparent when researching topics like these (and an enormous amount of research goes into even a short piece that is meant to survey a theme across an entire field such as science fiction and fantasy) is the suspicion of science and technology that pervades this body of fictional narrative.
Anyway, it seems to me to be true, and it provides a key for analysing much of the way science fiction narrative has worked in printed, cinematic and other forms over the past century and a bit.
Science fiction is often strangely ambivalent about the technologies that it depicts, whatever the surface of the narrative seems to suggest.

Comments on the `Encyclopedia of Science Fiction'
The effect of this overkill is to make the Encyclopedia at points appear padded, strained, and precious — as though the editors thought a crushing weight of obscurity would demonstrate their seriousness and erudition (and by extension the seriousness of SF scholarship).
It would certainly be critically useful to divagate on the ways in which AIs in science fiction have come to implicitly resemble (and sometimes be explicitly related to) the disembodied spirits, djinns, gods, angels, and devils of mythology (William Gibson's voodoo-god AIs, which quickly became cliches in derivative cyberpunk, beg for mention here).
But on the Encyclopedia's own best analysis this is not true — in fact, the protocols constitute a growing body of corporate knowledge that allows SF to be immensely more sophisticated and interesting than it would be otherwise.
