Try not singing the words to "Particle Man," "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)," or "Birdhouse in your Soul." (Apparently, "Particle Man" was so catchy that the song was later used as a sing-along in a cartoon show for children.) Combining a book-smart, funny love of history, junk culture, and film noir, this is the album to own.
Though "Birdhouse In Your Soul," "Istanbul," and "Particle Man" are perhaps some of the best known songs by They Might Be Giants to those unfamiliar with most of their work, the rest of the tracks match them in so many ways.
I admit than when I first heard "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" and "Birdhouse in Your Soul" on the radio (you might not think they got ANY radioplay, but I swear that Live 105 in the Bay Area used to play them), the songs drove me crazy (not in a good way).

In college I had to write down a song I knew by heart and choose particle man, I have taught Istanbul was Constantinople to girls I babysat, and a Birdhouse in My Soul is so catchy that I have placed it on so many mixed cds that my friends think Im crazy.
Flood shows the full genius of They Might Be Giants, both in the complex, yet often catchy musical composition and the cryptic, witty lyrics.

#1: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and After the Rehearsal
So much local color has been ingeniously tucked into each scene that the film's high concept, which by all rights should command our attention from first frame to last, is allowed to build in stages and even, from time to time, to fade into the background of some kookily eclectic character studies and mind-bending effects.
We are well into Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind before we realize what a crazy kaleidoscope of memory, projection, and fantasy we have entered; we are long out of the theater before we're able to shake the tugging, altogether remarkable mood of rueful romanticism that nimbly encases all the hilarity.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is either the most side-splitting sad movie Hollywood has ever made, or else the most plaintive comedy, I'm not sure which.

 THE STRAIGHT STORY
Spacek is memorable as the birdhouse-building Rose and could also garner accolades if Disney gives the film a big marketing push.
His Straight is reminiscent of Peter Fonda’s Oscar-nominated turn in Ulee’s Gold, with both mature characters going to any length to preserve their family in films that take their time to unravel.
But Story could be overshadowed by the Mouse House’s unusual number of Oscar-contenders this year, including The Sixth Sense and The Insider.

"Flood" is the album that introduced They Might Be Giants to me, with "Istanbul" and "Particle Man" being the tracks I'd heard that made me buy the album many years ago.
Lifting off from their previous album, Lincoln, which was a sort of transitional hit-or-miss, Flood is a soaring, catchy sing-along album destined for people who love quoting Monty Python sketches.

 Digest.10-1
The songs appear as tracks 18-24 on Severe Tire Damage, after live renditions of such better-known TMBG songs as "Birdhouse in Your Soul" and "Particle Man." Each of the "Apes" cuts is named after or corresponds to a film in the series and finds the band taking a different musical tack.
In addition, the suite features the non-corresponding cuts "This Ape's for You" and "Love Theme From 'Planet of the Apes.' " "We really were interested in doing songs about the different films in the 'Planet of the Apes' series, but we didn't know what all the movies were called," Linnell said.
They Might Be Giants Go Ape On New LP The pop duo's mostly live greatest-hits disc includes a song suite dedicated to 'Planet of the Apes' films.
