Where many albums nowadays are released with perhaps one worthwhile, standout track (and thus the promiscuous mp3 downloading) The End Of Heartache demands purchase as there are no less than six amazing songs.
Considering that The End Of Heartache is first studio album with Howard Jones on vocals and drummer Justin Foley behind the kit, Killswitch is remarkably tight and focused.
The combination of metal and hardcore is something that has begun to proliferate in the music world and Killswitch Engage is at the forefront of the movement, setting the benchmark that all bands of this ilk will forever have to follow.

Killswitch Engage - 'The End Of Heartache' review @ into-obscurity.com[enter the underground]
With "The End Of Heartache", Killswitch Engage are in a very awkward position.
This is true in the case of new guy Howard Jones picking up the microphone, but he does yeomen's work and, in the end, he eclipses the vocal performance of the ex-frontman.
What they have done on "The End Of Heartache" is tighten everything up.

When I spoke with Howard Jones-the fresh blood and new(ish) singer of Killswitch Engage-just prior to the release of 'The End of Heartache' he seemed somewhat impervious to the excitement typically generated by the release of a new album.
You might say it was a difficult interview to conduct, and by the end of it I was left with nary a trace of hope about Jones' passion for his band or the album he'd just spent several weeks recording vocals for.
Killswitch Engage do what they do very well, but because of their need to do it and make a career out of it, their music has a tendency to become tiresome when there is nothing truly outstanding in their cache of songs.

By fusing the best elements of American metalcore and European melodic death metal (i.e., the Gothenburg school), Massachusetts' Killswitch Engage achieved what hundreds of nu-metal bands only dreamed of: supplying American heavy metal with a viable facelift with which to set itself to rights in the new millennium.
Jones effortlessly matches his predecessor's talent for both clean singing and hardcore-style screaming, and additional highlights such as "World Ablaze" and the pulverizing "Wasted Sacrifice" prove his voice to be the perfect complement to his bandmates' technical proficiency.
As mentioned previously, The End of Heartache only errs for making very few attempts to expand Killswitch Engage's general formula, good though it may be -- but there's always a next time.

One element of change that's pretty noticeable on “The End of Heartache” is the insertion of gang vocals on a handful of tracks, including the closer, "Hope Is..." Guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz has become a mainstay on the heavy metal circuit, doing tongue-in-cheek "how to be old skool metal" columns in magazines and, more importantly, becoming a sought-after producer after twiddling the knobs on such monolithic slabs of noise as Norma Jean's Bless The Martyr And Kiss The Child.
These factors doubtless help turn attention away from the fact that The End Of Heartache is actually Killswitch's first album with a new singer - the rather wonderfully named Howard Jones (can you imagine if the lead singer of Slayer was called Nik Kershaw?!).
In the main, The End Of Heartache is not subtle, but it is big and occasionally clever, particularly in the lyrics which seem to speak of spiritual matters ("What would I give to behold the smile, the face of love / You've never left me / The rising sun will always speak your name").

On Killswitch Engage's previous two albums, the group delivered the sort of passionate speed/thrash rarely heard since RIDE THE LIGHTNING-era Metallica and REIGN IN BLOOD-era Slayer.
With THE END OF THE HEARTACHE, which features new singer Howard Jones, the band takes its signature sound to a new, absolutely ferocious level, combining slicing, neo-classical guitar riffs with vocals that alternate between gut-wrenching death-metal grunts and melodic crooning.
Though the album's wide-screen production values keep it from ever sounding too retro, THE END OF HEARTACHE will appeal to anyone pining for the '80s glory days when serious metal was synonymous with long hair and Anthrax t-shirts.
