The first film, which starred Cedric the Entertainer, followed the Johnson family on their cross-country trek to their annual family reunion.

They think the film wasted its many talents and is “one of the weakest sequels in recent memory,” “inept,” “lazy,” and “brain-dead.” “Be Cool” has an uncool Tomatometer of 29%, as of this writing.

The Entertainer (1960)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
One of the best British films of the sixties, The Entertainer was written as an allegory of Britain's fall from grace by the leading fist-shaker of England's band of Angry Young Men who stormed the London stage with revolutionary new ideas and content, John Osborne.
As for the unkind comment about Olivier marrying Joan Plowright and this somehow having an ironic similarity to the theme of Archie and his young women; they married in 1961 and REMAINED together until Olivier's death in 1989, which is completely the opposite of the point made in the story.
Well anyone is allowed to be in error, but this great film has to rank with our own country's Night of the Hunter as one of the most misunderstood films of all time.

DVD Verdict Review - The Entertainer
The film was a good example of the "kitchen sink" style of film that characterized Britain's own "New Wave" of the time—a style that focused on the working class and on the general decline of Britain's quality of life in the post-World War II period.
Indeed, it is an obvious one with its reference to the failure that was Britain's role in the Suez incident, but particularly the broken-down performer Archie Rice who served as a microcosm of the decline of Britain's social structure.
The heart of the film is of course Laurence Olivier's performance as Archie Rice.

Johnson Family Vacation (2004) - A Review by David Nusair
Though there's plenty here to dislike, ultimately the film's failure must be laid at the feet of its star, Cedric the Entertainer.
The film's screenplay, by Todd Jones and Earl Richey Jones, certainly doesn't do the cast any favors, as it places the emphasis on comedic set pieces that just aren't funny.
The whole thing seems to be an excuse for Cedric the Entertainer to do his thing, and unless you're willing to go with it, it's highly unlikely the film will come off as anything but an interminable 96 minutes.

Cedric the Entertainer is a very funny man. As he strolls into the room at the W Hotel in Westwood, L.A. it's clear that he's one of those people with that laughs-are-just-around-the-corner aura bouncing off him.
While many hit mainstream films have been made since the Huxtable days, the number of family oriented films starring fl actors has been low.

"The Entertainer" is the 1960 film in which Laurence Olivier, then 53, bid farewell to the romantic roles of his youth.
It is a harsh portrait, unclouded by the sentiment which flaws his work in the 1952 film "Carrie".
Olivier won an Oscar nomination for "The Entertainer", revitalizing his career as a strong character actor.

The Entertainer is not an easy film, populated as it is with unhappy characters and more than its share of tragedy, and with a less expert cast the proceedings would most likely have been overwhelmingly maudlin.
And the rest of the cast shines as well, especially Plowright as the daughter who sees her father for what he is, and loves him anyway, and Roger Livesey as the grandfather who innocently creates more disasters for the family.
The lower-class setting and the location filming have a tendency to make the image appear a bit dull, but overall the picture is remarkable.

Instead of a parade, The Entertainer was a funeral, and inherent in the film's depiction of dwindling glory was an indictment of Britain's dying prestige.
The film also marked a turning point for Laurence Olivier, whose performance as Archie Rice was an effective departure from the romantic roles of his youth.
The Entertainer was one of their most successful collaborations, and it remains an accusatory reminder of a time that many would just as soon forget.

In fact, discussions about the picture in terms of race are limited to the convention of fl comics playing more than one part in their starring vehicles and a scene in which Nate and D.J. settle an argument over suitable driving music by vetoing any performer who died of a gunshot wound.
The film was shot in Super35, and the basic difference between the two versions is that the widescreen edition masks off a lot of superfluous legroom.
Yet again we have a film that doesn't deserve to look as impeccable as it does here--barring some minor edge-enhancement, the image is certainly easier on the eyes than Johnson Family Vacation is on the senses.

To prepare for the role, Cedric The Entertainer says he watched all 39 episodes of the series ("The Honeymooners" debuted in 1955 with Jackie Gleason as Kramden and Art Carney as Norton.) This time, the aim is to pay tribute to the original by doing a modern version of it.
In the film's production notes, Cedric The Entertainer notes mannerisms just come naturally to Epps, so it was a perfect role for him.
Cedric The Entertainer's recent films include "Barbershop" with Ice Cube; "Intolerable Cruelty" with George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones, "The Original Kings of Comedy," a concert documentary directed by Spike Lee; and "Be Cool," the sequel to the hit "Get Shorty," with John Travolta.

In fact, the main intrigue of the film is whether Elvrum and Field are straight-faced jokesters trying to pull a fast one on hipsters around the Northwest, or whether they're simply a pair of utterly talentless musicians who are too pretentious or stoned to realize their own folly.
As the film unfolds, the duo's performances are interspersed with excerpts from conversations between the two musicians, most of which center on nutty performance ideas, such as passing their guitar around the audience during a performance.
While the film lacks a central conflict to elevate it to the level of, say, "Spinal Tap" or "American Movie," it certainly shares those films' devotion to their central characters.

The Entertainer of the title is Archie Rice, a mediocre music hall artist upholding a dying tradition in an English seaside against a background of the 1956 Suez Crisis.
Archie himself is a hollow man who brings pain to all around him, and while Olivier's brilliant performance reveals the layers of cynicism which disguise the emptiness inside, the emotional resonance lies with those forced to endure Rice's manipulations, adulteries and deceits.
Laurence Olivier was nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of Archie Rice, a down-and-out vaudeville entertainer in a seedy coastal resort, who is faced with an emotional crisis when he is visited by his daughter.
