The Entertainer is a 1902 piano rag by Scott Joplin which was later used as the theme music for the 1973 motion picture, The Sting.
Ironically, Scott Joplin's ragtime music was no longer popular during the 1930s, which is the time period the film is set in.

 Ragtime Piano, Musical Origins
These rags may belong to the "Eastern Ragtime" style or may not even be rags in the classical sense.
As a result, classic rags are generally referred to as those published by Stark, Joplin and another composer, May Aufderheide who referred to her own Joplin inspired works as "classic" rags.
As blues developed, even they often were indiscriminately labeled as rags and over time, the line between what was a rag and what was not became completely obscured.

Perfessor Bill Edwards - Scott Joplin Compositions (1895-1905)
Most of the rag was known to have been composed by Hayden, particularly the difficult A and D sections, while Joplin contributed the trio and a few other thematic touches.
While the bulk of the rag is Hayden's, the trio is likely by Joplin, who also influenced the D section with anticipatory syncopations, or chords played just ahead of and held over the bar line.
It also was the first rag he sold to a Chicago publisher, providing a new distribution base as well as a fresh audience for his works, which had already reached far by reputation.

While this is not an outstanding rag when played exactly as written, it does demonstrate the promise of the composer, although he may have been content working a steady job arranging the works of others.
It is subtitled "Joplin Rag", which is possibly a reference that the piece is intended to be in the style of Scott Joplin, but could alternately allude to the style of playing from his home town of Joplin, Missouri, the claim he stuck with.
The main theme of the rag is driven by a pattern of rapidly descending thirds.

It seems to me that Rags generally have stride in the left hand, with syncopation in the right hand played straight and chords generally not more complicated than a dominant seventh (with occasional diminished chords and others thrown in rarely).
I was using all kinds of Lydian scales and basically applying the Lydian chromatic concept to the Entertainer chord progresssion.
Pineapple rag is a nice bouncy one - the right hand part of the second section has become one of my favourite raggy riff's and it turns up quite often in my Dixieland style playing.

Joplin did for the rag what Chopin did for the waltz, taking it far away from its saloon bar origins and developing it into a purely pianistic art form.
It's difficult not to want to dance to it, or at least tap your feet or bop your head around to the embarrassment of your friends if you are listening on a walkman.
The finest part must be the Fig Leaf Rag, especially in the very evocative rolling chords of the fourth section.

One of his first compositions, The Great Crush Collision, was inspired by a spectacular railroad locomotive crash staged near Waco, Texas in September of 1896.
In the late 1890s, Joplin worked at the Maple Leaf Club in Sedalia, which provided the title for his best known composition, the Maple Leaf Rag, published in 1899.
This was followed a few years later by The Entertainer, another well known Joplin composition, in 1902.

There seems to have been a player piano in the home where he grew up; and he has mentioned finding some rags in a boyhood friends’ attic -- in any case he loved a wide range of music, luckily for us, Ragtime was among his enthusiasms.
A second wave of interest came in the early 70s when Joplin’s “Entertainer Rag” was heard in “The Sting,” a film with Robert Redford and Paul Newman.
It seems to me that he brought a fresh perspective that made piano rags compelling: he had a unique ability to make rags lively, to stomp and swing, and that’s why his music helped launch a revival of interest in Ragtime music.

Scott Joplin (c.1867-1917) is known as the "King of Ragtime." One of the earliest African-American composers to have his works published, Joplin brought a classical sensibility to ragtime, which had served as music for popular entertainment rather than as art music.
Although he is best known for his piano rags, he also wrote several songs and the opera Treemonisha.
Joplin's works were extremely popular during his lifetime and enjoyed renewed popularity during the 1970s, when his opera was staged and several of his rags were featured in the motion picture The Sting.
