Don (born Isaac Donald Everly February 1, 1937 in Brownie, a small coal-mining town (now defunct) near Central City, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky) and Phil Everly (born Philip Everly January 19, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois) are country-influenced rock and roll performers who had their greatest success in the 1950s.
The Everly Brothers have a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 7000 Hollywood Blvd. They still perform occasionally, despite having declared their retirement from both touring and the studio more than once.
As a special tribute to the Everlys, they were not the opening act, rather Simon and Garfunkel opened their own show and had the Everlys come out in the middle of the show for four songs.

However their next single, "Bye Bye Love," (which had been rejected by 30 other acts, including Elvis Presley) became an across-the-board smash, reaching #2 on the pop charts, and #1 on both the Country, and the R and B charts.

No doubt, the material the Everlys cut for Cadence is classic stuff...it defined the era in which it was released, and remains eminently listenable today; great songs, great voices, great arrangements, all state of the art in the late 50s.
The Everly Brothers are an institution and are deservedly one of the greatest talents, duo or otherwise, of the last century.

The lonesome two-part hill harmonies of the Louvin Brothers and Blue Sky Boys were slicked up just a bit and taken to the sock hop by the Everly Brothers.
Buying Everly Brothers CDs can be tricky, as lots of the compilations have remakes, live versions, etc. This fabulous CD has nothing but the original versions of 16 great hits, with superb sound quality.
This Everly Brothers compilation is one of the very few that includes one of my favorite EB songs, "That's Old Fashion".

My dad had sung with his brothers when younger, so dad is really the man that got us going in the right direction, and of course we worked in and early family show, and that was our real training ground.
Their albums became careless, erratic affairs, which was all the more frustrating because many of their flop singles of the time were fine, even near-classic efforts that demonstrated they could still deliver the goods.
The records (both live and studio) were fair efforts that, in the final estimation, were not in nearly the same league as their '50s and '60s classics, although Paul McCartney penned a small hit single for them ("On the Wings of a Nightingale").

By the early 60's the Everlys got into a dispute over royalties with Cadence and switched over to the Warner Brothers label, on which they had their fourth and final number one pop hit with Cathy's Clown in 1960.
Many other albums followed in the 60's, including one, Roots on Warner Brothers in 1968, which included parts of their radio broadcasts with their parents when Don and Phil were children.
They were feuding with each other, and this culminated in a violent breakup between the two in the Summer of 1973 when Phil smashed his guitar to pieces on stage and walked out.

To see two young fellows dressed in tight fitting jeans driving around in their Triumph and Healy sports cars out on a highway in suburban Nashville you would never know they were the hottest recording act in the business.

The Everly Brothers were responsible for revealing the possibilities for close, two-part harmonizing as the primary focus in rock music, thereby greatly influencing later acts such as the Beatles, the Hollies, Simon and Garfunkel, the Byrds, the Turtles, and Crosby, Stills and Nash.
However, the Everlys also exhibited a greater inclination to record middle-of-the-road, maudlin material during this period, most notably, "Ebony Eyes" (Warner Bros. 5199; 1961; #8), "Crying in the Rain" (Warner Bros. 5501; 1962; #6), and "That’s Old Fashioned" (Warner Bros. 5273; 1962; #9).
By 1963, the Everly Brothers were finding it hard to crack the Top Forty, despite the release of many excellent recordings.

The Everlys released their version in 1967, just a few months after Waylon Jennings released his.
This is a fitting song to end this collection, for even as they were releasing it, the Everlys were on their own way "home again"--out of their contract with Warners.
