In fact, Sherlock Holmes has become so popular, the industry surrounding the deerstalkered one is the literary equivalent of the Star Wars phenomenon (yes, there's even an action figure).
Holmes, most of them starting out with prefaces explaining how the manuscript was discovered in a dusty safe-deposit box or a battered old trunk in the attic of a house once belonging to Dr. John Watson.

Sherlock Holmes is one of those fictional detectives that you are either hooked on or are indifferent to (I alternate over cycles of about seven years -- must be some comet or something like that -- the comet must have come round again in 1998 to revive the Holmes interest, hence this web page).
This is a nice short novel that is a lot of fun, but Holmes still hasn't become 'himself' totally yet, although in some ways he is more interesting here than as the later formularized character.

In Arsène Lupin vs Sherlock Holmes: The Hollow Needle, newly translated by Jean-Marc and Randy Lofficier ($20.95), we have the first encounter and the last between the master burglar and the master detective.
Like many of Lupin's exploits, this is essentially a treasure hunt, requiring the solution of some cunningly devised clues, but the devil-may-care character of the earlier tale gives way to a deeper and darker conclusion.

I would guess that Adrian was attempting to keep the feel of the originals by throwing in "infer" whenever he could.
- Of more importance, it should be noted that the phrase "elementary, my dear Watson" is maligned amongst Sherlock Holmes fans for the simple reason that it does not ever appear in the original stories.
It was invented as a catchphrase by playwrights writing their own Holmes material during Sir Arthur's life and never adopted for use by the man himself.
The stories are filled with fl hearted villians, damsels in distress, atmosphere, and above all, the friendship between Holmes and Watson that have made them the most famous characters in the history of literature.
