(Redirected from The Fall of the Roman Empire (movie))
The Fall of the Roman Empire is a 1964 film starring Sophia Loren (Lucilla), Stephen Boyd (Livius), Alec Guinness (Marcus Aurelius), James Mason (Timonides), Christopher Plummer (Commodus), Mel Ferrer (Cleander), Omar Sharif (Armenia's King) and Finlay Currie (Senator).
It also depicts the debate the Romans were confronted with concerning the Barbarians, whether to fight and maintain cultural superiority but possibly lose everything, or give in to their demands in the face of overwhelming numbers, but still maintain independence.

The decline of the Roman Empire, also called the fall of the Roman Empire, is a historical term of periodization which describes the collapse of the Western Roman Empire.
Heather maintains the Roman imperial system with its sometimes violent imperial transitions and problematic communications notwithstanding, was in fairly good shape during the first, second, and part of the third centuries A.D. According to Heather, the first real indication of trouble was the emergence in Iran of the Sassaniad Persian empire (226-651).
In contrast with the "declining empire" theories, historians such as Arnold J. Toynbee and James Burke argue that the Roman Empire itself was a rotten system from its inception, and that the entire Imperial era was one of steady decay of its institutions.

Though Fall of the Roman Empire is now infamous as the epic which destroyed the cinematic "empire" of producer Samuel Bronston, the film is actually an above-average historical drama, attempting to make sense of the political intrigues which resulted in the dissolution of the Glory That Was Rome.
The film begins with wise, diplomatic emperor Marcus Aurelius (Alec Guinness) calling together the various representatives of the many nations within the Empire as a means of securing peace and prosperity for all involved.
Attempting to find a common ground between history buffs and action fans, Fall of the Roman Empire has come to be regarded as a classic.

The History of Roman Empire game is not strictly “historical” but offers a great lot of flavour about this, with its 42 roman emperors or pretenders and 34 peoples and kingdoms, recreating the struggle between legions, like civil war, and against the barbarians.
The History of the Roman Empire game especially works for fun, the rules are quite simple but, every turn the players must take decisions about which emperor wish became, which barbarian people controls, and where found new cities.

For the Romans, the story of the slave revolt was an awful warning: it suggested that a society built on the backs of slaves might one day be overthrown by them.
Unfortunately, one could argue that serfdom in the post Roman dark age era was a lesser position than that of a slave in the Imperial era.
Had the roman's stuck to their old ways and kept all the vital work inhouse, manning their armies with their own people, farming their own fields, perhaps they would of stayed a vibrant, republican minded state.

The problem with the movie was not bad acting, it had a good screenplay but mediocre roles for the actor's to deal with and even worst lines.
However, The Gladiator failed to address the downhill slide the empire took due to corruption of government as The Fall did address in just a few seconds in the final moments of the movie when Steve Boyd declines the offer to become Caesar and the title is then sold to the highest bidder.

Like his previous epic El Cid, The Fall of the Roman Empire remains one of the best of the 1960s epics: well written (and largely historically accurate) with strong performances and a consistently elegant style, but it lacks a central core and the magnetic hero of its superior predecessor.

We might be watching the death of the genre at the same time as the death throes of the empire.

Deserting the usual conflict of Christians and Romans, the story moves to a later era and charts the intrigues surrounding the Imperial throne, held by Marcus Aurelius and coveted by the corrupt Commodus, that led to the Romans' downfall at the hands of the Barbarians.
