The Fan is a 1996 thriller film directed by Tony Scott and starring Robert De Niro, Wesley Snipes, and Benicio del Toro.
While the film did poorly in theaters and was generally regarded by critics as a flop, The Fan is often considered to be underrated by movie goers from communities such as IMDb.
Gil, disillusioned with his Rayburn's disrespect towards the fans, spirals further down into insanity, pretending that Rayburn's son is his own, and eventually killing a former friend of his on the way to a little league baseball field where he plans to hide the center fielder's son.

We are particularly conscious of that because the constituency to which we report, the Congress of the United States, is largely--or, to a very considerable extent--dependent on television for their election or their de-election and extraordinarily interested in it as a medium with which they practically all have rather intimate familiarity and a growing familiarity.

Fans are part of the narrative solution: it is by becoming a fan (using fan knowledge) that characters are empowered to fight back against killers.
The transposition of fan knowledge into Final Girl know-how is a romantic gesture to the extent that it fails to consider horror fan knowledge as something that is developed in the face of media regulation (that is, censorship) as well as via media access.
The clash of male and female viewpoints, fan and non-fan, is hence also marked out as a clash of cultural and subcultural capitals within the film, with the horror fan's knowledge being counterposed to the student's more "legitimate" cultural capital carried in and by her thesis.

The film is scheduled for theatrical release in March 2002.
It is no surprise that today this film is often referred to as a "Norton movie." In this aspect, "Primal Fear" is a rare treat, as it offers a glimpse of the moment when an aspiring actor becomes an institution.

I guess that as with most other films that MD references, connections can be broken down into different parts; for example the themes that are at play, the structure by which the story is told, and possibly also direct references/homages through dialogue, props etc. There seems to be much at play here.
