HD DVD Review: The Fast and the Furious | High-Def Digest
There is something to be said for pure entertainment movies like 'The Fast and the Furious,' which elevate a threadbare plot and cliched characters through sheer force of their style, and turn out to be far better than they have any need to be.
Film grain is present if you look hard enough, though the source material appears to have been heavily processed during post-production (either that or the anti-film grain fairy was feeling particularly kind towards 'The Fast and the Furious').
As is, 'The Fast and the Furious' is great demo material, and a disc you have to watch at least once to see what your HD DVD home theater rig is truly capable of.

THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS film review In Film Australia
'The Fast and the Furious' is a banal movie that attempts to forge a connection between juiced up nitrous oxide loaded sports cars and the spirituality of the meatheads driving them.
When the vehicles in this movie are filmed and edited with the kind of pseudo sexual admiration of a cult fetish (learn more about this in Cronenburg's 'Crash') it is hard to accept that the people sitting in the drivers seats are of anything more than secondary importance to the machines they are operating.
That knowledge is transformed in 'The Fast and the Furious' into a grab for something greater, a more dramatic element that 'Gone in 60 Seconds' didn't want to tackle.

Furious' story also revolves around a pretty-boy undercover cop (Paul Walker) who cozies up to a charismatic adrenaline junkie (Vin Diesel) who may — or may not — be leading a dangerous criminal gang.
Furious' plot may not be fresh, but its action is. Veteran stunt coordinator Mic Rodgers creates one of the best automotive spectacles since The Road Warrior, with hair-raising chases, races, and wrecks galore.
Furious' accuracy is also echoed in the creatively titled featurette "The Making of The Fast and the Furious." Besides the usual self-laudatory patter, the featurette offers an interesting and often amusing glimpse into the street-racing subculture.

The street.car racing sequel, "2 Fast 2 Furious" (Universal), stalls and sputters as it depends on showy racing sequences to poorly disguise its empty shell of a script.
Paul Walker reprises his role as Brian from the original 2001 "The Fast and the Furious." In the sequel's plot, with holes wide enough to drive a Mack truck through, Brian is now a disgraced cop who squeaks out a living by illegally racing cars through the streets of Miami Beach.
Despite the fueled car races with their hairpin turns and spin.outs, "2 Fast 2 Furious" is a yawner, unable to interest the audience in what is happening to the characters or produce more than mild excitement with its action scenes.

HAVING surprised many by being one of the hits of 2001, The Fast and the Furious sequel will be looking to repeat the same trick in the summer of 2003, as 2 Fast 2 Furious screeches its way onto UK screens.
For starters, two of the main reasons for the first film's success are missing - director, Rob Cohen, and, more importantly, one of its two stars, Vin Diesel (both opted to pursue the xXx franchise, rather than going down the same road as the fast and the furious).
He believes that an integral part of the success of the first film was that it had managed to tap into a culture that hadn't really been exploited since the days of American Graffiti.
