Classic-Horror Review of The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967)
Except in Roman Polanski's The Fearless Vampire Killers, the vampire is gay, the "damsel" is also the ostensible hero (and male), and the chase sequence involves slick floors that cause both pursuer and pursued to slide crazily as they run.
Toss in a Jewish vampire who chuckles when a crucifix is brandished at him ("Oy, hev you got the wrong vempire!") and you have enough of the right ingredients that any semi-competent director could toss together a nutty caper with laughs every other minute.
Fearless Vampire Killers is set in winter, and the mise-en-scene reflects the cold, chapped nature of the weather and creates a feeling of being trapped in wide open plains.

Murnaus "Nosferatu" probably is the most uncanny and Coppolas "Dracula" the most splendid movie of the genre; "The fearless vampire Killers" is without doubt the funniest one.
Meanwhile "The fearless vampire killers" has been shown on TV innumerable times, and should be one of the most popular vampire movies ever.

As the vampires hold an annual ball at which they will feast on a number of locals, the professor and his protégée manage to make off with one of the victims and successfully flee into the night pursued by a hunchback sledding in a coffin.
In one scene the vampire killers and the woman they are trying to rescue are leading a dance at the ball.
TFVK is one of my favorite vampire flicks; i put it right up there with BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA and DRACULA 1979 (featuring Frank Langella).Polanksi plays the bumbling assistant of a dotty old vampire killer.

Scifilm -- Reviews, THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS (1967)
The terrible fate that befell Tate (FVK was made just before she and Polanski were married) puts a completely different slant on the scenes she appears in.
The sets look wonderful, especially during the brilliantly staged "vampires ball" (the UK title is DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES) and the scene when the music stops and only three people are visible in a huge mirror is a real tour de force.
There are none of the usual heroics here, just two hopeless would-be vampire killers, and all in all the movie is far superior to the majority of vampire flicks.

As far as I'm concerned, THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS is one of the best vampire films and certainly the best horror-comedy ever made; the sooner it's released on DVD, the better.

Poor mix of humor, scares in 'Fearless Vampire Killers' (printable version)
Vampire mythology offers countless opportunities for laughs, but filmmakers rarely find them.
Even Roman Polanski failed in the 1966 horror-comedy “The Fearless Vampire Killers or: Pardon Me, but Your Teeth Are in My Neck” about a scientist (Jack MacGowran) and his assistant (Polanski) who infiltrate the castle of a powerful vampire (Ferdy Mayne) and try to rescue his latest victim (Sharon Tate).
The latter is funnier than “The Fearless Vampire Killers” itself, but that’s not saying much.

The story follows Professor Abronsius (Jack MacGowran), vampire hunter and elderly, eccentric kook, and his meek assistant Alfred (Polanski) as they trail kidnapped village girl Sarah (Sharon Tate) to the castle of Count Von Krolock (Ferdy Mayne), himself a vampire about to host an annual blood-sucker's ball.

 The Fearless Vampire Killers
The resulting movie, The Fearless Vampire Killers/Dance of the Vampires, enjoys a reputation in some circles to rival that of Young Frankenstein, but to my way of thinking is not nearly as effective a parody.
The Fearless Vampire Killers certainly looks the part— watch a randomly selected clip with the sound off, and you’ll be hard pressed to tell whether it came from this movie or Kiss of the Vampire— but it comes up short in one immeasurably important respect: apart from a few scattered moments, it just isn’t funny.
But the comedic pacing of The Fearless Vampire Killers— it’s jokes-to-time ratio, if you will— isn’t nearly frantic enough for it to function as a farce, while the Hammer trappings are laid on so thickly as to leave the audience little choice but to interpret the film as satire.

The best of these, 1967’s The Fearless Vampire Killers (known outside the U.S. as Dance of the Vampires, and the basis of a recent, successful, European stage musical), is newly available on DVD.
The Fearless Vampire Killers has the bright, cheap look of the kind of Hammer horror films that were produced in abundance in its day, and a tone that’s marvelously balanced between garish horror and broad, neck-breaking comedy.
The Fearless Vampire Killers was Polanski’s first big-budget feature, and it was saddled with its terrible title (The Fearless Vampire Killers, or Pardon Me, But Your Teeth Are in My Neck in full) by a nervous studio for its American release.
