The Fellowship of the Ring, as Tolkien wrote it, follows the travels of a small band of Hobbits who find themselves taking on the heaviest burden of their world, that of delivering a weapon of world domination into the bowels of a volcano to be destroyed.
Instead of cutting back and forth between the Fellowship and Saruman's massing of orcs (meanwhile, back at Isengard...) we needed to catch the hobbits speaking amongst themselves, alone and discussing the burden, because it's how they handle their responsibility that the story is supposed to be all about.
The movie is still a wonderful adventure to see, well acted and worthy of most of the hype and praise it has received.

In fact, the movie trims a few places where the novel treads on and on, cuts out a few scenes that aren't required for the main plot, and generally tightens the story in order to make it leaner and clearer.
Told in the prologue, this is the "one ring", lusted after by the evil lord Sauron, and required by him to once again rule the world.
When Bilbo decides to go away for good he leaves the ring to his nephew Frodo (Wood), who at first doesn't understand the power of the ring, but is told by Gandolf (McKellen), a powerful wizard and old friend of the family.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
The Middle-earth of this ''Fellowship'' -- as directed by Peter Jackson with all the graceful inventiveness hoped for from the maker of ''Heavenly Creatures'' -- is vibrantly, intricately alive on its own terms.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Movie Review
Published in the mid-fifties in three parts months apart, The Lord of the Rings is often, even by fans, considered a trilogy (or, more fanatically, THE trilogy) when it had always been intended by the author to be a single novel.
However, that the mismatched volumes of The Lord of the Rings are so ingrained in the public as "a trilogy" makes any film adaptation problematic; the public expects a trilogy of films, and (as has already been demonstrated) the story does not fit well into this format.
I was going to give Fellowship of the Ring 8 of 10 stars, subtracting two stars for gratuitous references to the novel's table of contents, and for a few special effects that didn't work (most notably Galardiel's Mirror).

Elrond is loath to send two young and irresponsible hobbits along with the fellowship, and, in the movie, he seems to blithely allow it.
Actually, the special effects were excellent throughout the movie, and the size tricks and the fireworks at the beginning stand out.

Having read the Lord of the Rings trilogy of books multiple times in my younger years, I was VERY skeptical that any translation of the material to the big screen could remain in any way faithful to the original material.
The ring, which holds ultimate power over men, elves, and everyone else, is then lost for nearly 3,000 years.
