The Field Mice - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Field Mice were the most popular band on the seminal, cult indie label Sarah Records.
Later, Field Mice members Wratten, Annemari Davies (Wratten's ex-girlfriend), and Mark Dobson briefly formed the more synth-oriented outfit Northern Picture Library, and then Wratten went on to form Trembling Blue Stars in 1995.

The Field Mice too seemed to naturally embrace this notion, which is as well, since they had a magical formula to peddle.
There is an argument that suggests that the expansion of The Field Mice to a five piece replaced the original fragile beauty of the group with a more masculine physicality: that the feminine quality of the group was essentially lost when, ironically, a physically feminine quality entered the group.
In the end of course the arguments didn't matter, as The Field Mice effectively split even as the album was being promoted on their UK tour.

Charlie the Field Mouse and the Song of the Corn - A Delightful, Poetic Story for Children
He tells the little mice that they, too, will someday work in the fields and hear the beautiful rustling of the fall cornstalks- this lovely singing of the corn which from time immemorial the field mice have called the Corn Concert.
And after this daily concert, it was home to their burrows for the adult mice for supper and tea, and the all-important job of tucking the littlest field mice into bed.
These little mice were too small to gather the scraps and tidbits in the farmer's field, and too small to go to the delightful corn concerts.

t turned out to be the only full studio album the Field Mice released was also nothing less than a quietly triumphant masterpiece.
Building on the strength of its string of great singles while keeping its own particular character and mood, For Keeps -- a sly and sharp title, given how many of the band`s songs reflected both love`s creation and dissolution -- found the five piece full of gently impassioned creativity.
In the end it`s the Field Mice, but it`s a much more accomplished and intriguing Field Mice than the band`s detractors (and possibly many of its followers) would ever give it real credit for.

For many, The Field Mice sum up so many memories, almost invariably associated with a first kiss or a fleeting but beautiful relationship or even just dreaming about having one.
Their light, jangly pop was tailor-made for sensitive, misunderstood souls and could only have helped inspire the likes of Belle And Sebastian to start making records.
Also, The Field Mice offered a neat sideline in the shoegazing sounds of the time, clearly heard on 'White' and 'Sensitive' whilst 'Letting Go' is a fine piece of ambient pop.

Indeed, the singer/songwriter of that group, Robert Wratten, is also the creative force behind Trembling Blue Stars, which he founded after the breakup of the Field Mice and a brief interim project called Northern Picture Library.
By the third Blue Stars release, Wratten and Davies were sufficiently reconciled to play together again; she appears on 2000's Broken by Whispers, as does Field Mice co-founder Michael Hiscock.
Still, it's very much Wratten's band and the continuity from the Field Mice days is quite apparent.

Where'd You Learn to Kiss That Way? - The Field Mice - Song Listings   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Although revered in certain indie circles, for far too long the Field Mice appeared in danger of languishing as the great lost pop band of the early '90s, with their records out of print and fetching obscene prices on the collector's market.
And while it's a shame Shinkansen didn't opt to include a third disc and release the band's complete recorded output, each of the 36 tracks which did make the cut sparkles.
No longer lost, the Field Mice were simply a great pop band, and with Where'd You Learn to Kiss That Way?, their music might finally reach the wide audience it so richly deserves.
