Athenry (Baile Átha an Rí - Ford of the Kings - in Irish) is an agricultural town in County Galway, Republic of Ireland.
One of the attractions of the town is its medieval castle.
Athenry lies on the Galway–Dublin main line of the Irish rail network, at the junction of that route with the disused Limerick–Sligo line (dubbed the Western Railway Corridor – see Irish railway history).

The Fields of Athenry is a song about the Irish Potato Famine, which was composed in the 1970s by Pete St. John.
Controversially, a section of Celtic fans are known to interject the song with references to the IRA, the problem is bigger with the away support.
"The Fields of Anfield Road" is sung by Liverpool F.C. supporters to the same tune, but with suitably adapted lyrics referencing their history and stadium.

There were some great performances at home and abroad for Athenry AC runners in what must have been one of the busiest ever for the club with action at home and abroad, on the track and road.
Athenry AC have announced a short programme of open track and field events which has been scheduled for the evening of Saturday the 8th of July on the University Track in Dangan, Galway between 4:00pm and 7:00pm.
Although runners and walkers were not blessed with the same fantastic weather as in Athenry a week previously it was a good night to run with only a light cool breeze to hinder their progress.

Pete St. John's the "Fields of Athenry" has become an anthem for the masses (after being brilliantly interpreted by Paddy Reilly) in much the same way as the Corrie's "Flower of Scotland" is now almost the unofficial National anthem of the Scots.
I wrote the Fields of Athenry in the middle 1970's and it was finally recorded and released in 1979 by Danny Doyle and became a top 10 hit and the rest is history !
The Athenry in question is Athenry in Galway and if you do happen to get the chance to visit, you will notice the 'Low lying fields' as you approach this beautiful town.

I was never clear on which Athenry they were refering to in the song, we have one here in Galway, but it's been disputed that the song was for us ::pout::.
The assertion is that the Fields of Athenry was printed in 1888 in Dublin by someone called Devlin.

I found fields of Athenry further down in the same bin (they all have wonderful graphic names like M001f34Z).
All I can say, is, I had a WONDERFUL time singing for 5 days out in the woods and between that and the 10 hr drive home I have a serious sleep deficit to overcome.
