The Ethical Culture Fieldston School is a private school in New York City and a member of the Ivy Preparatory School League.
Fieldston, Riverdale, and Horace Mann together are known as the "Hill schools", as all three are located within two miles of each other in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, on a hilly area above Van Cortlandt Park.
Part of the school's curriculum, per the philosophy of its founder, Felix Adler, is a heavy dose of ethics and moral philosophy.

Cynthia was president of the Parent Organization at the elementary school for two years ('76-'77), took one year off while she remained on the Board of Trustees, and then was president of the secondary school in 1979 and '80.
There were school barbecues and many social occasions, which made Oakwood a nice place for parents, as well as a nurturing, relaxed environment for their children.
She wanted her children to do well in school and feel positively about learning as those were important values in the Kraft household, and consequently she felt that her involvement as a concerned parent was important for her family as well as for the other students at school.

The news that sixth-grade students at a Park Slope middle school were encouraged, as a class project, to mail letters to a soldier stationed in Korea, some of which turned out to be virulently anti-war diatribes hurtful to the GI, is a disturbing reminder of how easy it is to manipulate children for political ends.
I wonder whether there were students in the class who support the war in Iraq but who felt pressured by their peers, or by the teacher, to participate.
That is why the public schools must be free of this kind of politics.

As important as we all believe this issue is and as much as we hoped for from the assembly and the accompanying activities, the events of the last several days have persuaded me that the assembly forum we chose to launch this discussion was not appropriate given the sensitivity and complexity of the issue.
The school withdrew its invitation to Qumsiyeh and scrapped the assembly.
It would be interesting to see if the parents who agreed with Roth would welcome an assembly in which two people spoke of Intelligent Design, one addressing the literal truth of the Old Testament, the other positing the theory of the Almighty as watchmaker and the world and its population as teeth in the gears.
