 The Firm (1988) (TV)
Plot Summary: This is the story of rival "Firms" of football (soccer) supporters, and how one man has a wish too team them up for the European Championships of 1988...
Despite the fact I avoided football through the 'boy' years, I thought this film was fantastic, and Gary Oldman showed his talents in everything he made after it.
I have tried without success to buy this film through friends who have visited England during the years that I have been away.

 DVD Times - The Firm
When Alan Clarke's The Firm was first broadcast in 1988, it was greeted with the same kind of outrage that greeded earlier Clarke films like Scum and Made in Britain - the usual drearily predictable demands for it to be banned, accompanied by luridly sensationalised distortions of the film's content and purpose.
The ICC firm's ringleader is Bexy (Oldman), an estate agent by day, a family man in the evening (his wife, Sue, is played by Oldman's then real-life wife Lesley Manville), and the leader of a gang of vicious thugs during the weekend, engaged in constant running battles with rival firms: football barely gets a look-in.
True, this means that the film grain is pin-sharp as well, but this is a result of Clarke's fondness for shooting on high-speed 16mm in natural light rather than any defects in the transfer.

 Firm, The Review (1988)
The film traces their adventures from one battle to the next as Bexy strives to bring various ‘Firms’ under his control, establishing himself as ‘top boy’ amongst a united army of English hooligans in the run up to the 1988 European Championships in West Germany.
But above all it’s the climactic bar room brawl which makes this worth tracking down, with Bexy's crew exhibiting some of the most cynical swinging of baseball bats ever caught on film (topped only by Pesci’s demise in Casino).
Along the way there are many memorable scenes; the black kid’s afro, Bexy’s childhood bedroom, his doting father, the team photo, the administering of a ‘Chelsea smile’, the rows with his wife and Bexy’s total disregard for the mental and physical scars which his lifestyle causes to those around him.

But far from being a piece of mindless exploitation, in retrospect it's all too clear that The Firm is one of the definitive films about the Eighties in general and the Thatcherite mentality in particular.

Morita recently suffered a stroke that, it appears, ended his working life, but the eager willingness he and Ibuka shared to move out into a world that the Japanese had traditionally avoided has become a part of the "story" that makes Sony atypical for a Japanese firm.

In 1988 Sony bought CBS Records, and in 1989 it bought Columbia Pictures plus TriStar Pictures, Loew's Theaters, and a raft of smaller entertainment properties -- and Wall Street and the entertainment industry snickered.
