Christmas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first naturalistic explanation of the star of Bethlehem was given by German astronomer Johannes Kepler in 1614.
Jesus was born sometime between the first appearance of the star of Bethlehem and the time the magi arrived in Herod's court.
The phrase "Christmas tree" is first recorded in 1835 and represents the importation of a tradition from Germany, where such trees became popular in the late 18th century.

The First Noël - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"The First Noël" (sometimes "The First Nowell") is a traditional English Christmas carol, most likely from the 16th or 17th century, but possibly dating from as early as the 13th century.
In its current form it is of Cornish origin, and it was first published in Some Ancient Christmas Carols (1823) and Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern (1833), edited by William Sandys.
Another parody of The First Noël appears as a 60-second holiday preview spot that would air every year, starting in 2003, on the digital cable network The Family Channel.

The First Noel lyrics and music
There is a misconception that the First Noel was French and it is believed that this is because of the French spelling of Noel as opposed to the olde English Anglo-Saxon spelling of the word as Nowell.
After England was captured by the Normans numerous words were adopted from the Norman French language and Noel was re-spelt as Nowell, the early printed versions of this carol use the Nowell spelling.
The First Noel was first published in 1833 when it appeared in "Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern," a collection of seasonal carols gathered by William B. Sandys..

 The First Nowell
In the original, Noel, the French word for Christmas, or Christmas-carol, is corrupted to "Nowell." I have not hesitated to restore the correct rendering.
It probably first appeared in Davies Gilbert's collection of Carols sung in the West of England [1822 and 1823]; and next in Mr.
It was first found in the "Hutchens manuscript," according to the editors of The New Oxford Book of Carols, and then found its way into the hands of Davies Gilbert, who included the 9 stanzas of the carol into Some Ancient Christmas Carols, 1823.

The tune, which may be English or French, is undoubtedly very old.
