Fisher King - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The character of the Fisher King (though he is not called by that name) appears, and presents Peredur with a severed head on a platter.
Here, the "Rich Fisher" is called "Bron", a name similar enough to Bran to suggest a relationship, and he is said to be the brother-in-law of Joseph of Arimathea, who had used the Grail to catch Christ's blood before laying him in the tomb.
The Fisher King shows up as "Pop Kingfisher" in the novel and film The Natural, and the story is dealt with humorously in the movie The Fisher King.

The Fisher King (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Fisher King is a movie from 1991 written by Richard LaGravenese and directed by Terry Gilliam.
The legend varies, but all iterations posess three elements: the Fisher King was charged by God with guarding the Holy Grail, but later incurred some form of incapacitating physical punishment for his sin of pride, and had to wait for someone to deliver him from his suffering(usually Percival).
This was the first film Terry Gilliam directed in which he was not involved in writing the screenplay.

 The Fisher King
The Fisher King is one of the most perfectly executed movies of all time, from the stunning and highly imaginative screenplay to the haunting quality of the direction and the sheer genius of Williams and Bridges, who both turned in the performance of a lifetime.
While the film succeeds brilliantly even as a basic story of star-crossed individuals working out their joint karma, it is the concept of the soul's journey homeward that drives the deeper levels of The Fisher King.
With "The Fisher King," Gilliam has given us a wonderfully textured morality tale, both entertaining and engaging and rich with metaphor and substance that will endure the test of time, because it is, in the end, a story for the ages.

 Reel.com: The Fisher King
The Fisher King is hardly an obvious choice for the best film of the 1990s.
The road to humanity is fraught with peril, as Parry induces Jack to join in his knightly adventures in the asphalt kingdom of New York, beginning with the rescue of a suicidal cross-dressing diva (Michael Jeter) distraught over the extinction of the debutante scene.
In The Fisher King, Terry Gilliam combines fairy tale fantasy, dysfunctional drama, Williams-powered comedic moments, and the peripheral surrealism typical of the director's work; the result is a film that truly calls for repeat viewings.

 The Fisher King (1991)
Yes there is some visible film grain and a softness to resolution noted to several scenes that would be perfectly expected for a film source of this age, and this softness is highlighted more so in several of the indoor/low light scenes.
Whilst the director has employed a generally drab and washed out colour palette for the first half of the film, to reflect the down-and-out nature of the life of the two central characters at this point, the colours are handled faithfully by the transfer.
As the film progresses though, there is a gradual and highly effective increase by the director in the use of colour employed, particularly for stark relief of such central images as the appearances of the Red Knight (very impacting against its drab street surroundings) and the Chinese restaurant scene.

Terry Gilliam's romantic parable THE FISHER KING is yet another visually stunning work from a master filmmaker, with a different kind of heart from Gilliam's other films, delving deep into the nature of love and loss, of guilt and redemption, of character and tragedy.
The film grossed $41 million at the box office and was nominated for five Oscars.
THE FISHER KING marked the first time Terry Gilliam directed a film written by someone else; he said he wanted to do that to prove to himself that he was a film director, not just a filmmaker.

Moreso than in any of Gilliam's other films is the stories' plot capable of producing a successful vehicle for Gilliam's well-known propensity for complexity that normally tends to muddy the focus of his efforts to the detriment of the film.
The Fisher King provides a concise outline of this complex process just as clear as the first Star Wars movie presented us with a concise example of Joseph Campbell's hero's journey.
The strength of the film is that Jack regresses to his old arrogant self and denies the homeless folks he has befriended and even denies, Mercedes Ruehl, the woman who is devoted to him and helped him arrange the date between Parry and Amanda Plummer's character.

And so it is with "The Fisher King," the first film Gilliam has directed without developing the script himself.
For me, the most annoying aspect of "The Fisher King" is its penchant for extreme highs followed by extreme lows — with very little room for middle emotions in between.
But perhaps the film's most significant achievement is that it takes the homeless situation and focuses it on real individuals (however exaggerated they may be), making us care about them as people.

Surprisingly, The Fisher King's ultimate problem is not that these divergent goals stumble awkwardly into one another; almost everyone involved works admirably to negotiate the entire range of tones suggested in the writing.
The plot of The Fisher King is too strange to elaborate much further without ruining the momentum of the film, a misdeed that Gilliam himself commits about twenty minutes before the movie's conclusion.
Much of the film's middle hour, for example, is devoted to Jack and Anne's project to play match-maker for Perry and Lydia (Amanda Plummer), the mousy office-worker he has watched for months from the street.

In its retelling of scenes selected from the thirteenth century French prose Vulgate cycle, this film presents the stories of Arthur and Guinevere, of Morgan and her jealousy, of Merlin and his enchantment by Vivien, and of the Fisher King Bron, his daughter, and her son, Galahad.
Clearly, Zucker intends his film to be an Arthuriad for the 1990s, but the film fails to capture the spirit of the original legend or to make a case for its contemporary translation of the oft-told story of the Arthur-Lancelot-Guinevere love triangle.

What is perhaps most intriguing in the case of this "little idea" is that the focus in this outlandish scene is not upon the teeming, swirling hordes, but on the two souls wandering in their midst.
Filmed in slow motion through clouds of smoke, the vision is of a Manhattan aflame, as if Hell had opened up and no one but Parry were witness to that.
It is most telling in the ways the filming and release of his pictures seem to parallel the conflicts and struggles of their storylines, with the director himself living the experiences of his characters.

October 2, 1991 -- ``The Fisher King'' is a modern, eccentric and imaginative retelling of the legend of the Holy Grail.
Some critics have found fault with the ending of the film, saying it is ``tacked on.'' That is not true, the ending contains an essential element of the Grail myth and it wraps up the underlying conflicts of the film in a very neat and satisfying manner.
What I found lacking in the film, however, was a proper motivation for Jack's actions near the end of the film.

But the surprise is that the film is far more than that, it is not merely a novelty eccentricity film.
In fact the prime cause of eccentricity on screen is actually Robin Williams who enters the film so whacked and spun out it seems almost inconceivable that the film will ever straighten out into a relatively coherent telling of the Grail story without resorting to some kind of Noh interpretation.
But there is the point where the film suddenly evens out and moves beyond its bizarre capering to discover a transforming emotional substance.

The Fisher King, yet another film from director Terry Gilliam, is a quaint and unique tale about how humanity and salvation can come from the most unlikely of sources.
Then, later in the film, Williams strips down to nothing with - as he says - "the little guy danglin'." Even so, I assure you there is no need to worry; a bare Robin Williams still appears as if he is wearing a wool jumpsuit.
Despite this film's unnecessary nakedness and rather lengthy running time, it is still an eloquent screenplay under the management of a master director.
