The "5" Royales - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most of their big RandB hits were recorded from 1952 to 1953 and written by guitarist Lowman "Pete" Pauling; later cover versions of the band's songs hit the Top 40, including "Dedicated to the One I Love" (The Shirelles, the Mamas and the Papas), "Tell the Truth" (Ray Charles), and "Think" (James Brown).
Originally the Royal Sons Quintet, the group began recording for Apollo Records in the early 1950s, changing its name to the Royals after abandoning gospel for secular music.
The "5" Royales broke up in 1965, though various combinations of musicians would tour under the group's name into the 1970s.

 The  Five Royales
First it was alleged that the Royales were making appearances billing themselves as the "5" Royales then, as the popularity of the Royales started to gain momentum, it was the "5" Royales were on the defensive.
Everything was smoothed over by mid-1954 when the Royales changed their name to the Midnighters, but in August problems between the "5" Royales and Apollo Records found Lowman Pauling in court suing for back royalties.
In 1960, the "5" Royales were involved in another lawsuit with fellow King artist James Brown concerning the song "Think." The lawsuit forced them to leave King, and for a time they recorded for Home Of the Blues in Memphis, which leased the masters to Vee-Jay and ABC Records.

The Royal Sons had been around for a few years and now they were in New York to begin recording secular music as The Five Royales.
The other group had their roots in the nineteen thirties as The Selah Jubilee Singers, and were now to be re-christened (by Bess Berman) as The Larks to compete with The Orioles and Ravens in the era of the "bird groups".

 MUSICMATCH Guide: The "5" Royales
The "5" Royales were a relatively unheralded, but significant, link between early R&B and early soul in their combination of doo wop, jump blues, and gospel styles.
They would change their name to the "5" Royales in 1952, although they would, confusingly, remain a six-man outfit for a while; the quotes around the 5 in their billing were designed to alleviate some of the confusion.
Their constant activity at King Records, in all likelihood, had some influence on the young James Brown, then starting his career on the same label; one of Brown's first big R&B hits was a frenetic cover of "Think." They couldn't sustain themselves without more hits, though.

The gospel quintet the Royal Sons would soon become the Five Royales, who would help father the new sounds of rhythm and blues.

Hank Ballard - Biography - AOL Music
Around the same time, singers Henry Booth and Charles Sutton were organizing a doo wop outfit called the Royals, which reputedly at one time also featured Jackie Wilson and future Four Top Levi Stubbs; it eventually grew to include vocalists Lawson Smith and Sonny Woods, plus gritty guitarist Alonzo Tucker.
Initially copying the smooth style of Sonny Til & the Orioles, the Royals were discovered by Johnny Otis in 1952 and signed with Federal Records.
Ballard's first recording with the group was 1953's "Get It," which hit the Top Ten on the R&B charts, but it was the following year's ribald "Work With Me Annie" that really broke the group (they changed their name to the Midnighters around this time, to avoid confusion with the Five Royales).
